Charity Donation in Honor of JohnA

On behalf of the FlyerTalk community, I would like to donate the sum of 50,000 miles to a charity in the name of JohnA, our FlyerTalker. Ideally it would be for AIDS research or related, unless there is an idea from the community for what works best. I surfed around a few of the airlines and can't find an associated charity, so I thought I'd ask for assistance and input for the community. These 50,000 miles will be in his name and supplied by the FlyerTalk board itself.

Input please.

Randy,

I did not know JohnA, but know that what you are doing will certainly be appreciated. Not sure where JohnA lived, but I know local charities would be very appreciative of a gift... they are often forgotten with the larger charities.

Also, the Aids Quilt organization could probably use such a gift.

Just my two cents.

Just a suggestion Randy, maybe you can contact either of these groups and donate the miles in JohnA's name.

Hope this helps.

I am sure open hand could use the miles as one poster suggestred as a raffle item...altho given Johna's love of theatre, BRoadway Cares would be a wonderful cause as well.

Thanks for your thoughtfulness Randy -

Any of the above are suitable and deserving, but my proximity to the theatre district here (< 1 mi.) prompts me to mention that Broadway Cares is well-known and respected here. Also honorable mention to Gods Love We Deliver.

Thanks again, Randy, for your thoughtfulness.

Bravo for this inspired idea, Randy, in memory of a most dedicated and respected member of FlyerTalk.

The charities suggested by John's family are excellent choices. Might I also suggest a local charity here in San Francisco, the AIDS Emergency Fund, which is designed to make use specifically of this type of gift.

The AEF provides short-term funds to help meet the financial needs of people with AIDS who cannot afford rent, food, utilities, or travel to see their families or travel for essential medical care. You can learn more about them at http://home.pacbell.net/aefsf/

Obviously, such a gift could enable two individuals to travel across the country to see loved ones or specialists, if needed, or one individual to travel overseas.

I never knew John, even though we lived just blocks apart, but when I joined FlyerTalk last November his posts jumped right out as knowledgeable, balanced, and helpful. He clearly loved travel and loved this group.

Would it be possible to match FlyerTalk's generosity? I would be willing to also contribute miles in John's name, if you settle on a worthy recipient charity. Today's my birthday and being able to mark such a good soul's contributions is better than anything I would receive today.

Martin
