on a related note
Emirates sometimes sends out emails offering discount upgrade Economy to Business but whenever I received them I was upgraded at the gate for free
not yesterday on EK380 (DXB to HK), Economy had lots of empty seats
I boarded from the upper deck, 1st Class was near empty and Business Class far from full
offer was for AED1800 one way

Upgrade given: J -> F
Upgrade location: Check-in at SIN
Flight number: EK404 (Ticketed as QF8404)
Aircraft: A380
Type of ticket: Qantas Business Saver
Route: SIN-MEL
Tier states: Qantas Platinum
Date of travel: 17 July
Number of Pax: 1, Last Name C
Did not do online check-in. When I checked-in 4 hours before flight at the airport, my SEQ number was 600.
I know the A380 has less than 600 pax but the flight originated from DXB, so i guess they keep continuing the SEQ number for pax checking in from SIN instead of starting from 0 again at SIN.

After a long lean period (more than 2.5 years)
Upgrade given: Y -> J
Upgrade location: Check-in at BKK
Flight number: EK419
Aircraft: 777
Type of ticket: Ebookers Emirates Special
Route: BKK-DXB (on to MAN in eeconomy)
Tier status: Silver (just requalified)
Date of travel: 3 Aug
Number of Pax: 4 (2 blue, 1 not a member as under 16)
Last Name: G
After a very long period with no oppups and travelling with husband and two teenage children (15 and 17) I didn't expect much but knowing it's a busy route I cancelled you daughter's vegetarian meal for BKK-DXB leg without telling her. Checked in on online and arrived at airport very early (over 4 hours but that was due to long car journey and allowing more than google maps said in case of problems - reality was we did it much quicker). Don't know whether fact I am only in UK for 22hrs before I'm back on Emirates for work (MAN-DXB-JNB-LLW) helped or whether booking 2 times window and aisle seats helped. Nice end to holiday.

[QUOTE=skywardhunter;27014921]You were upgraded tomorrow?[/QUOTE
Doh. Jet lagged / brain dead / body doesn't know where it is or what time zone it is. That should say 4/8/16.

Upgrade location: Gate
Route: BHX-DXB
Flight number: EK40
Type of ticket: Flex (originally booked as Saver, but was changed to Flex when I upgraded the outbound DXB-BHX with miles)
Date of travel: 04 Aug 2016
Tier status: Silver
Tier miles to date: 26,880
Skywards miles balance: 48,024
Number of pax on the same PNR: 1
First letter of Last Name: S
The earlier flight EK42 was cancelled and I noticed several other people being upgraded at the gate. Flight was changed from a 2 to a 3-class A380 several days prior to departure, and was completely full according to the crew.

It's been quite long ago but I will just post it anyway. I was flying from Manchester to Kuala Lumpur via Dubai and I got upgraded at the gate in Dubai. I have requested for special dietary meal (seafood) long before the flight and was surprised that I was served with the seafood special meal in business class too which led me to believe that the upgrade must have been decided more than 24 hours before the flight.

In my time as a silver tier member I have never received a free upgrade. I'm two more European qualifying flights for gold status. I always seem to get the email offer, if I don't take it I've never been offered at check in or the gate. I must have one of those faces :-)

After all loaded, it was discovered that plane was broken. A6-EPO. Three weeks old! I'm sure it's still under warranty!
Replacement aircraft and was airborne 4hours later. A good day/bad day
