They are all "new" seats.
The difference between the old and "new" is minor.

EL AL competes on the US with Delta and United. Dreamliner should be 1 2 1 or at least 2 2 2. Hopefully the seats will be better than the seats in 777.

Can anyone comment on which pair of seats is the best in business to Europe on both the 737-800 and 737-900? Or at the very least, which to avoid? Thanks!

First row is bulkhead.
Avoid the last row.
On the 737-900 the is a lavatory behind you, on the 737-800 there is Y.

Is the bulkhead any better or worse in some regard? On the 737-900 we have those seats - 10A/C. I booked them thinking it would be better because nobody in front to recline into us and usually bulkhead has more legroom and privacy. Am I wrong?

I usually go for the bulkhead on the 737s.

Yeah, the recline looks very generous and I think I'd rather have slightly less leg room with nobody leaning back into me...

Any other tips/hints for a first time El Al European J flyer?

Yes -- do not take take the window seat in any row except the bulkhead. The seats recline so much that it is extremely difficult to get out of your seat if either the window or the aisle seat in the row in front of you is fully reclined. This is made more problematic as the armrests can not be raised.

It can be difficult getting out if you are in the aisle seat and the seat in front of you is fully reclined but at least the chances of the aisle seat being reclined are only half of that of either the aisle or window seat being in that position. Also, you will only have one armrest to get past.

Is there a big difference between the 747 and 777 seating in business? Usually fly out of JFK but may have to fly out of Newark. I'm new to LY, my parents who have flown LY before have only flown out of JFK. Edited to add that the EWR flight is a 777. Is there really the middle of 3 seats for a flight that long? That looks awful. Any way to see the seat map before you book?

The 744 is much better if you can get seats on the upper deck.

I've flown in the middle seat on the 777 ex-EWR but in the bulkhead so it wasn't as bad. Certainly not preferable, though keep in mind that on LY, no C seat will guarantee you unrestricted aisle access with no one climbing over you.

Well I doubt anyone is going to be climbing over you if you're in a window seat...
