DL redirecting flights over the north pole

http://www.foxnews.com/scitech/2012/...rm-in-7-years/

According to the news article it sounds like DL is the only airline doing this ... surely other airlines must be following suit ... but wonder why it makes it seem like it's only DL that is changing their route?

The other airlines have Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer on loan from Santa to help guide them?

Could be that other airlines had a different risk model and decided the risk was low enough that the cost of rerouting wasn't justified. I kind of like Delta's erring on the side of safety rather than running flights and closely monitoring for any issues.

I will have to assume that the following paragraph was added after you read the article:
"We know that some airlines did not fly the polar routes yesterday," Biesecker told FoxNews.com. Delta is one of them, rerouting flights between Hong Kong and the U.S. that usually fly over the pole.

China Eastern has been running the JFK-PVG with a stop in HRB the last two days. This would probably explain it.

Or perhaps it's to carry people for Lunar New Year to their hometown or for visits to the ice festival.

Hmm, possibly, but it was showing as a diversion and not a scheduled stop.

Yeah, my guess is the 346 doesn't have the range to do JFK-PVG non-stop if it detours off the polar route.

Except for Quantas and Air Canada, who also rerouted.

[edit] The Quantas re-route was interesting, because it was SYD-EZE over the south pole.
