My thought process was if I booked it as a RT with J on outbound and Y on return then I may not be able to rebook the Y to J if saver level opens up without having my J outbound reprice.
-Is that a correct understanding or would my outbound J price be 'locked in' no matter what?
As someone who is more risk averse, I figured I would hedge my bets and at least get the OW J ticket locked in and then keep checking over the next 10 months in hopes that a return saver level will open up.
- If it does open, I'll call back then and see if they can rebook both segments at saver level as a RT. If not... well then I'll still be going round trip to Europe with the wife for ~$500 total with outbound J and return Y+.

175K miles and under $100, J ATL-(DL)-ICN-(KE)-BKK-(CZ)-CAN-(CZ) YYZ-(DL)-ATL
The outbound was a day later than ideal. Since grabbing it I have been trying to find the perfect dates, and have not even come close. Expert flyer is tossing out "no soup for you" on every attempt I make (even when I break it down). And dl.com just laughs at me.
Yes, good fares can be found. But DL makes it as hard as possible.

20K miles + $5.60 for the one-way non-stop transcon LAX-JFK. There were lower priced flights if I took the red-eye (think it was 15k or 17.5k) but was flying with Grandma and she's not down with that.

I did a 5-week flexible search for LAX to JFK, one-way, using miles, non-stop only. January 2018 (because that was the date I was looking at for something else) is mostly 15K.
Picking a few other months at random:
August 2017: 44K the first week, 27K the weeks after that, and scatted 15K and 18.5K at the end of the month
October 2017: almost all 15K
but per the OP the 15Ks may be red-eyes only or something, didn't dig futher.

Booked DAY-DTW-MUC-DTW-DAY in D1 Sep 3-12 , 175k mile + $108.
Maybe not as great as in the past, but not bad in the current scheme. Some dates were as much as 350K miles.

Had to change my plans, was able to cancel this ticket (thanks Delta for your free cancellation of tickets for platinums and above) and was able to get SIN CAN JFK on China Southern for 95k miles

Booked HND-LAX-SAT for 2 in J for 80k miles each. Schedule change 2 days after booking (9 months out from flight) changed my 5 hour connection to 7 hours. Called in and was able to change to NRT-DTW-SAT with only a 3.5-hour connection and an A350 on the TPAC leg. HND-LAX was on an A330 so probably the best J product in the current fleet, but I'm excited to try something new.

70K Oneway for RDU-IST in Delta One on Christmas Day. A few options were available:
- RDU-DTW-AMS-IST on DL/KL with either 1hr40 in DTW or 12hr35 (?)
- RDU-CDG-IST on DL/AF
I went with the former as I'd rather do an A-330-300 across the Atlantic than a 757-200 and I vastly prefer AMS to CDG.

14K for a $252 ticket ITH-DTW-DCA ... noon-ish departure on a Sat when I fully expected to find both prices much higher, due to lots of alumni showing up for campus events Thurs/Fri/Sat ...
