This thread is a continuation of the discussion posted here from 12.08.2012 - 5.13.2014: Barclays Arrival/Arrival Cards (1.05%/2.1% travel credits)

Current offer for Arrival Plus is 70K pts w/$5K spend & AF waived 1st year.

Barclays says that you earn “miles” but you’re actually earning cash back with the card since you can’t transfer your Barclays miles to airlines. But you can redeem them for statement credits at 0.5 cents per mile (poor value) or 1.05 cent per mile if you redeem for travel.

You get 5% of your miles back if you redeem for travel, so 40,000 miles gets you $400 towards travel and 2,000 miles back (5% of your miles back). You must have at least 10K 'miles' in your acct if you wish to redeem as a travel credit. 2500 'miles' can be redeemed for a stmt credit though.

If you want, you can redeem miles to cover a portion of a travel charge instead of the full amount. For example, if you have 80k miles and a $740 airline charge, you can choose to redeem just 70k to cover $700 of the charge.

You earn 2X miles on all purchases, so you’re effectively getting 2% cash back for each purchase. But since you get 5% of your miles back when you redeem for travel, this is effectively a 2.1% cash back card when miles are redeemed for travel.

This makes the Barclaycard Arrival PlusTM World Elite MasterCard® (with 2.1% cash back for travel) better than the Capital One Venture card which offers only 2 miles per $1 or 2% cash back, only if you spend $30k+ per year after first year, because Arrival Plus AF is $30 more than Venture.

If you receive a call from 302-255-8000 after applying for this or any other Barclay's card, it is a legit number! You can also call them back directly at 866-951-1437.

Thanks for confirming. Wiki says unsuccessful so wasn't sure. I'm guessing if its purchased at a store like CVS or some other retailer then obviously that wouldn't count but purchased at correct areas would work. I believe SFO airport has one and that would seem to make sense.

One other wiki update from San Francisco. I purchased 2 x $30 Alcatraz tickets and those posted as "TOURIST ATTRACTIONS AND EXHIBITS" which was able to be offset.

I'm thinking of staying at an mLife (MGM) property, which seems to indicate I can use my room key for charges at 12 different participating mLife hotels in Vegas.

So I was thinking that I could eat at restaurants in these hotels, charge them to my room, and then pay the hotel bill with my Barclaycard and redeem my points.

Is my thinking correct? Is that the way mLife works (I'm not a member yet)? Will all those charges simply come up as "hotel" and therefore be eligible?

Thanks for any advice!
Yes, it should work. I've done it that way before and redeemed.

Am I missing something here? I've read elsewhere that CS will allow exceptions to merchant codes that don't show as redeemable for points but that is not my recent experience. I've been contesting three charges recently, one of which is admission to the New Orleans Zoo (coded as: AQUARIUMS, SEAQUARIUMS AND DOLPHINARIUMS) and have been told there's not way to make exceptions on these. If it isn't redeemable online it's not redeemable. Period.

Really makes me question using this card over a 2% cash back card.

Have gotten a hint at this from previous posts - but wondering if anyone has more info on getting approved for second Arrival+ with bonus after having previous Arrival+, then downgrade and cancel. I canceled regular Arrival a week ago (along with 2 other Barclays cards a couple weeks before that). So I currently have no Barclays cards and the last time I applied for any was an AOR over 6mo ago. Wondering what chances of an instant approval are.

I SM to cancel mine and my wife's last week. I have similar plan to reapply and am considering when to do so. If I apply too soon and get denied, then you have to wait 2 months. I want to use the cards to buy plane tickets on airtahiti from ppt to BOB for jan of 2016. Hmmm, when to apply ...

Any data points from people of how much time between canceling and applying?

Cancelled Arrival+ end of January (AF posted and refunded) - 2 weeks after getting Arrival (no chip version). 6 weeks later applied for Arrival+ and was instantly denied reportedly because I already had enough "relationship" (Arrival no fee card), but after calling reconsideration line was approved but only after paying off Arrival (and using up 20k sign up bonus) and closing that account (transferred 10k CL to Arrival+). The 40k points offer SEEMS to apply, but can't tell for sure until I hit 3k spend - which should happen within the next month. I really hadn't intended to test short churn or getting 2nd 40k sign-up, but First Tech Visa version card turned out to be chip and signature but no offline pin, so Arrival+ was better for traveling abroad in April.

I just applied 10 days after closing Arrival (non-plus) and did not receive instant approval.... grr. Has been over 6mo since I applied (and receive instant approval on) a Lufthansa card.

Sit tight. Don't call recon. Barclays will often approve the card after 5-10 days. Did you apply for the A+ or regular A this time?

It looks like I'm able to redeem A+ points against a TrenItalia fare booked online through the ItaliaRail site.

Bummer man. I'd be willing to bet it's b/c you didn't wait enough time after closing that non-+ card. But Barclays is weird, some people they instantly approve even if they currently have that same card still open. Not me though, they'll only let me have 2 cards at once, and I have to wait 6 months between closing and reapplying.
