www.12306.cn is the website of Chinese Railways and you can book tickets there is you understand Chinese. You have to pick them up at the station if you have a foreign passport. I've used this service more than once, but the other services people mentioned are probably more use friendly, I imagine.

Those are pretty tough conditions for foreigners to use! To be fair, in a couple of years maybe I can use it . The TA across the road from my office does a fair job and I just pick up the tickets the next day for a 10 RMB fee each way so that's what I'm sticking with.
While you can buy at the station if you are flexible, if you want 1st class this might require waiting an extra couple of hours.
Thanks

Ctrip is the only one of these 3 that doesn't hit you with a sky high surcharge, but there are many other sites like it, and as JPDM points out, buying at the train station (or at train ticket office, even better) is usually pretty easy insofar as Jinghu G trains are concerned.

The last couple of years I've needed to buy tickets for groups of about 10. We've arrived in Beijing a few days before the train ticket was needed and I've had the hotel concierge purchase the tickets as soon as we arrive with no problem. The concierge takes down all the passport info for each passenger. The surcharge may vary based on hotel, but I've paid 5 RMB per ticket for delivery to the hotel the next day.
