London Gatwick has reopened (Looks like it wasn't just FT that had problems today...)
Seemingly FT wasn't the only thing brought down today - LGW was apparently hit by "extreme weather"
Looks like 19 or so flights cancelled, including JFK:
Following this mornings closure due to extreme weather conditions, London Gatwick airport has now reopened.
There have been a number of flight cancellations due to the closure.
All customers with flights to/from Gatwick today, 11 December 2008, are advised to check the status of their flight before they leave for the airport by using our real time flight arrival and departure information

Extreme weather my ****.
One flight got in this morning and reported poor braking action after which somebody suddenly realised that they had forgotten to treat the runway. As a result, everyone wound up diverting or cancelling for the next many hours.
There is a special AOC meeting tomorrow where BAA airside ops will be hauled over the coals by the airlines. This level of incompetence is unprecedented even for them.

I wasn't working today but the ice was already forming by 1900 last night. All the aircraft were having to be de-iced. It was clear from that time that it was going to be a really cold night. BAA really do have some serious questions to answer as to why they didn't de-ice the runway. The consequences could have been so much worse.

the 5 BA pax that actually use LGW were slightly inconvienced then.. was there last week and it felt like a ghost town, got on plane and saw the reports of next round of LGW job losses, so tragic.
