Ah, well that probably means a compressor stall then. Fire is mostly oil and maybe brakes, probably spreading to the nearest available rubber.

Nothing you want with your wings loaded with fuel though but no reason to assume it is even close to a write off. Unless it was something completely different of course... Speculation. It is the bread and butter of the InterWeb.

According to a passenger in the Guardian article, the fire melted some of the windows. This might compromise its airworthiness, and also lead one to ask what else was damaged.

From photos there were flames licking the leading edge of the wing, so certainly more than smoke damage. Whether that's just a case of replacing panels or risk of structural damage I have no idea (if structural elements got heated up that can't be particularly good for them)

Being the 20th anniversary of the tragic MAN British Airtours runway fire, I expect some comparisons to be drawn in the press probably - hopefully very positive ones too given the outcome of the fire here.
Sorry for nitpicking, but it's actually 30 years rather than 20 ( I feel old) .

Luckily there was a journalist on board....

From the other pplace...

Pax on the news just then saying that it happened before the takeoff roll, captain came on and said "suffered a catastrophic engine failure, probably won't be going anywhere"..
Love British crisis communication.

Also on the ATC end. Amazed at how both of them can keep so calm. I know training helps, but it's still amazing to see/hear.

I was on the first flight (the LHR shuttle) to arrive after MAN re-opened. It was very sad with the press conferences going on as we walked by in the baggage hall.

Best video I have seen

Like you would expect with a compressor stall caused fire, it was already going out before the fire trucks came to finish the job. The pax are fun to watch again.

Is there an ATC feed anywhere?

Major to the morons with their hand luggage. If I was trying to get off the plane and was being held for even microsecond b/c of someone trying to get their bag I would push them right down the aisle and call them every word in the book.

Will this plane be written off?

And thereby creating your own problems. Here is how it looks from the inside...

Maybe not as fast as you think....

Will this plane be written off?
Don't think so, unless it was about to be replaced.
