BA 777 Catches Fire on Landing at LAS

Slides deployed, blackened fuselage, all reported safe. Breaking on US broadcast news right now.

Correction: this was a departure, not a landing. Reportedly BA2276 to LGW.

Bulletins:

Here is video on Twitter:

Witness report from the scene posted to Reddit says the a/c suffered compressor stall on takeoff, apparently on #1 / port engine, and flames went up in less than 30 seconds:

A little more from the Las Vegas Review-Journal newspaper:

One runway closed at McCarran, aircraft stationary.

Unhappy British Airways plane on fire at LAS

Looks like a bad fire at LAS. Only seeing some photos on Instagram. Looks like left engine fire. Hop everyone is ok.

Edit: can be deleted. Beaten to it.

From LAS Twitter feed

@LASairport: UPDATE 4:33 PM -- There were 159 passengers and 13 crew on the flight. Two were transported for minor injuries.
Was the LGW flight (departing) - G-VIIO it seems

And another 777 out of action. Weren't they short on those ?

A departure... So loaded with fuel. That is not good. Great work getting everyone off and getting the fire out ^

If it was a compressor stall, then this is interesting...

The 787-9 you were drooling over on another thread may be pressed into service sooner than expected (but still 3 weeks off delivery...)

Interesting to see slides on left hand side of aircraft deployed (but thankfully nobody getting off!) - is that automatic or does that mean someone opened a door first (the main bit of the exit row briefing card on short-haul that sticks in my mind is to look before opening the exit)

Pretty quick response by the airport fire service by the looks of it. As henkybaby says, that would have carried a fair amount of fuel in its wings.

Glad everyone escaped from that. It could have been a lot worse. ^

Judging by that fire it's very fortuitous that it started before they were airborne.

Am I seeing things or is flight aware tracking the wrong aircraft?

http://embed.flightaware.com/live/flight/BAW2276

EDIT: flight aware is "estimating" the flight.
