RMS St Helena is expected to continue operating until April of 2016, not sure what happens after that. Might mean that to get from one to the other one would have to go St Helena-JNB-LHR-RAF Brize Norton-Ascension (quite a detour, but I can see some AA award flights within 1 zone happening ^ ) (if only RAF would join OW)

Atlantic Star said in their last email (yesterday):

We are also busy working on a proposal to link St.Helena and Ascension Island so for those of you who have contacted us about this service please be patient - we hope to have more details on this by October 2015.

Thanks. Interesting. ^

And glad to see it will be a 'BA Operation' as the CEO and Director are both BA captains (as are many of the non-execs...). Maybe BA should simply do it.

IATA has assigned the code HLE to the airport
ICAO gives it FHSH

Now this is good news for two reasons: (a) You can visit ASI, and (b) since the airframe has an overnight in ASI, you could visit HLE for just an overnight stay while the airframe goes to ASI without you.

I have believed for a long time Britain has neglected its overseas territories. I hope these links with St Helena and flight every four weeks are the start of a policy of engagement. I am hoping British Airways start direct flights from the UK, and a 5* hotel opens up on the island. I think the runway length is a mistake as direct flight to the motherland are not possible with most types of aircraft. An extension to take a 767 would be lovely.
