I read somewhere that there is a kiosk right by the Avianca gates(before immigration). Is this true?

Thanks!

This is not an answer to your question but, if you travel overseas often, consider switching to Tmobile. SMS is free. Calls are 20 c/min. Free data roaming (it's slow but enough for email, social media, whatsapp).

I actually prefer a local San Salvador mobile number on a prepaid SIM so
my local friends/contacts can call me with just a local call. I will probably
not be calling them.

I do wish I can switch T-Mobile. I was with them between 1999 and 2005.

Then I moved to a city of 350,000.... for some strange reason, T-Mobile's
coverage here is still only 2G. Yes, I said TWO-G. The local T-Mobile
store manager said we probably would still be stuck in 2G for at least
another 2 years.(early 2018 is when T-Mobile corporate expect to upgrade
us from 2G to 4G... 2018... 2018???!!! ) For Pete's sake, my "little"
town has 7 Walmarts within a 10-mile radius, yet T-Mobile thinks it's okay
to keep us in 2G? (especially considering that Walmart and T-Mobile
markets their own service)

Besides, I still have my Verizon unlimited data plan grandfathered in.
(monthly usage about 700gb) As soon as T-Mobile goes 4G here
in two years, I'm switching to T-Mobile's unlimited data plan.

7 walmarts?! That's a lot of "people of walmart" photos...yikes.

Sorry I don't have an answer either, I'd suggest somewhere very close though. Perhaps even in the terminal. I haven't exited at SAL, but check around both domestic and international arrivals. If it's anything like BOG/PTY there'll be plenty of sales of phones and sim cards.

Just before going downstairs to immigration there is a kiosk from one of the local carriers (can't remember which one) and they should have SIM cards there. If they don't or you don't like them, after clearing immigration you can re enter the terminal building where there is a Claro shop that should also have cards for sale.

Thanks!

I have already returned. There were at least two places inside SAL airport
that sold prepaid SIM cards. I bought one for $5 and I was able to call U.S.
phone numbers for a total of 85 minutes. Refills were readily available on
the streets and I bought them in $3 increments. It was really easy. It did
help that I had a friend who spoke semi-fluent Spanish. None of the people
that I met on the street(or shops) speak English. Even the people in the
hotel that I stayed at did not speak any English. Strangely, there were
a couple of guys with full body tattoos(even on their foreheads) who spoke
fluent English, like they were from California or something.
