Scheduled departure 1:15
Delayed departure #1 @ 2:15 scrubbed & everyone deplaned
Delayed departure #2 @ 3:45 turned into 4:11 after a detour to the penalty box
No PDB
Choice of chicken curry wrap or lemon grass salad w/salmon (FA acknowledged my pre-order of the salad)
No bread basket
Choice of white chocolate chip or double chocolate chip cookie
No mints

I flew from LAX to JFK on the 7am flight Tuesday morning, and was completely disappointed with the meal. Instead of offering a proper breakfast, or even lunch, they served a bad excuse for a panini. Of course, there also was no ice cream sundae.
I can understand if they don't have a real breakfast or lunch on a short flight, or even a 3-hour flight in the same time zone... but it was pretty disappointing that they didn't offer anything better on a 5 hour flight where the destination is 3 hours ahead.

Were you on the three class 763? If so were you in F or J if I may ask?

That pita fauxnini is the most disgusting AA dish I've ever had. I cringe at the thought of ever getting that option.
AA transcon breakfast really is pathetic. It's extremely poor, especially comparing to what AA serves on dinner flights. The recent addition of the fruit & cheese plate in addition to the cookies/fruit cup prior to landing is a nice touch though. Unless, they have since cut the fruit and cheese plate?
If you want a good breakfast on the LAX/SFO-JFK route, fly Delta, hands down. Staggered flat bed. Multi-course brunch with appetizer and hot nuts to start. Snack basket before landing. Amenity kit. ^

But do you think a 'lunch' or 'dinner' panini would be acceptable on the same sector? I think flight departure time is irrelevant. Fares in J/F tend to be the same at breakfast time as they are at dinner time. Have the panini there as an option and great, if you want something 'light' then you will be delighted. For those who want a slightly more substantial offering they should have that option also.
If I left home at 5:30am and that's all I was offered on a 4.5-5 hour transcon I would not be happy - especially given the superior offerings on lunch and dinner flights of the same length on the same route. It's not like you have many pre-dining options in the AC either.

I wonder if "Cajun Shrimp" is the same as the Shrimp & Grits I had SAN-DFW on March 10? It was probably _THE_ very best meal I've ever had on AA Domestic, bar none, and yes, I'm a Cajun Cuisine expert. 
I realize that every person doesn't like the same thing ... but if they ever offer you the Shrimp & Grits (the actual choice offered was merely "Shrimp or Chicken?"), go for it.
