Stickers out of whose account if linked PNRs upgraded separately
I called to link with a PLT for upgrade. During the process, the agent asked, "If only 1 upgrade is available, would you like to split up and process the upgrade?" I said sure.
My upgrade cleared within the PLT window. The PLT did not clear. I waited for about an hour and called in. When the agent pulled up the reservation, she said the PLT had been upgraded. I thanked her and went back to check and sure enough the other upgrade had processed.
I do not have any stickers in my account. When I go to check in (I have another segment before the segment together with the upgrade on the PNR), I was able to check in. So could the PLT.
Question, whose account are the stickers coming out of? I remember from an earlier incident that if we link together, the stickers will come out of my account unless we go to the airport as ask for it. It actually did not let us check in. Now, since we are able to check in, is it safe to say that stickers are coming out of the PLT account? Slightly confused because the system let us both check in, when it should not since I dont have any in my account.
UPDATE: We both checked in fine at our different originating airport. At ORD, no problems boarding the flight. So, stickers did come out of the PLT account.
NEW UPDATE (1/8): The rules have now changed, and linked elites will have stickers taken out of individual accounts automatically. This includes both elites on the same PNR and ones on different PNRs linked together. Not sure when exactly the change happened, but seems like its been in effect for a couple of months or so.

Your status shows EXP so you shouldn't need stickers to upgrade.

I wouldn't worry about it:
Either the stickers will come out of the PLT account (and it sounds like this is what you want), or
no stickers will be deducted since you don't have any.
No way to tell from here just what's up.
Cheers.

My wife and I had a situation like this at JFK about a year ago. When I as an EXP was upgraded as we agreed to break the link between our two reservations, my wife who was a Platinum, was moved down on the upgrade list below the other EXPs. Later she was upgraded as the gate agent boarded and escorted her from her coach seat to the front of the (Air)bus. We found that stickers were taken out of her account.

Looks like that is whats happening - split PNRs.
We may not know what exactly happened here. But, in the case of a split, where I got the upgrade, what happens to the PLT upgrade priority? Is the PLT next in line or system puts in line with the other PLTs (based on request time).
In our case, upgrades were an hour apart. And I know (well 99% sure) that no one else was upgraded looking at the seat map. So was I the last EXP and PLT first in line? Or was the PLT just next in line with an EXP priority?
Just wondering...

Don't confuse split PNRs with the "split/no-split" indicator with respect to upgrades.
If your companion is linked to your account, using your status, they will be one notch behind you wrt upgrades, even if you clear and they don't. If they aren't the next one upgraded, it's because someone with higher status than you joined the list.
As to whose account they come out of, they have been coming out of my account (i.e., the higher status one).
Whether that is the only way to do it, I don't know.

To Update, we were able to check and board without any issues, so stickers are coming out of the PLT's account unless it was a truly 'free' upgrade somehow.
