I just got off a DL flight and reading the in-flight magazine I was reminded that I did not bother with the Skytrain, nor should most people making such a connection. They have a jitney leaving from a couple of points between T4 and T2. So take that, then make the 1 minute walk between T2 and T1 and see the excellent staff at La Premiere check in.

The advantage of the AirTrain route is that if the weather is bad it is completely indoors (T4 to T1).

Yes, that actually happened to me on this trip we are talking about here. My first flight was DL and DL printed out the AF connecting flight. Both showed PreCheck. Not that it mattered with the escort.

I honestly do not think that there is a general advantage, but maybe the more important point is that I do not think that there is a particular disadvantage either! Personally, if connecting between two flights, at least one of which is long haul, if the weather is not too bad, I really enjoy getting a bit of fresh air. In fact, I keep wishing there were a similar outdoor walking path between T7 and T8 for my AA-BA connections but unfortunately, there the airtrain is the only option. If people prefer not to walk, however, the T4-T1 airtrain is of course perfectly fine as well.

Good to know that it seems to be otherwise.
I presume there will be a dedicated TSAPre lane at JFK T1 now that Lufthansa does participate in the program. Won't make any difference for Premiere passengers, but for those on the DL-AF connections that have TSAPre also for the Air France longhaul connection this is neat.

Interesting. Having followed the discussions in the LH forum on the "analogy" i.e. UA-LH connections with UA flight numbers I got the impression that this wouldn't work when the foreign carrier is not participating in TSAPre.
Good to know that it seems to be otherwise.

Yes, from T4 to T1. The good thing is that you'll get the escort through security at T1. This security check-point in JFK1 is the worst I know in the US. Always crowded and super-messy. And the priority lane is a complete joke (true at most US airports, but this one beats the record).
