Routes that do not have fuel surcharges (YQ) when operated by carriers that normally charge YQ:
1. USA-Germany-Other country. If only the Germany-other country segment is on LH it does not have YQ. E.g. DFW-FRA-BLR with TATL on UA and FRA-BLR on LH.
2. USA-Canada-Other country. The USA-Canada segment on AC does not have YQ if the Canada-Other country segment is operated by a carrier that does not charge YQ. E.g. DFW-YYZ-ADD.

Eh...I said (destination IST) in my original reply, so yes, IST was my destination
I've seen YYZ-IST-Europe 1 options on AP for 2015 X'mas (I was testing out 2-stop + destination to Europe 1 for X'mas).
but Europe 1 return options usually doesn't involve IST unless you force it, but then it may exceed MPM

(admittedly, I have not touched AE for a while, and my last TATL redemption was very simple-GVA-LON-CHI-SFO-EWR-BCN, on LX/UA.)

Shout out to James at AE in Vancouver, who booked this for MamaTwick and I without batting an eye - he even gave us our booking references for TK and UA, and made sure to note on our accounts we were travelling together:
YQB-YUL AC Y
YUL-IST TK J
IST-BCN TK J
Return:
DUB-EWR UA J
EWR-YUL AC Y
YUL-YQB AC Y
90,000 miles + $165.10 + tel. booking fee each, but James was worth it...

YUL-MUC LH F
MUC-MPL LH J
MUC-YUL LH F
125K plus around $1200 with change fee. Pretty excited to be flying F for the first time even with the YQ.
Original was YUL-BRU-MRS-BRU-YUL in AC J and the taxes were the same as F pretty much. That would have been annoying but had no choice on routing at short notice.

Crazy RTW Booking!
Craziest itinerary I've ever had - took hours on the phone to book, as all my original plans were violating some routing rule.
Cost: 165k + $227 taxes + $35 booking fee (X 2)
$15 Carrier Surcharge, various $10-25 charges from different countries.
YUL-IST TK J (9h 15min layover - looking forward to the IST lounge!)
IST-CAI TK J (20hr layover - see the pyramids)
CAI-BKK MS J (Stopover - 20 days)
** Various Air Asia revenue flights around Thailand/Cambodia**
BKK-SIN SQ J (1hr layover)
SIN-MNL SQ Y (4hr25 layover)
[If I miss the above flight, there are Philippine, Jetstar, and TigetAir flights that would get me to MNL on time. Would SQ put me on those flights?]
MNL-ROR UA J (Destination - 3 days)
ROR-GUM UA Y (6hr30 layover)
GUM-NRT UA Y (23hr30 layover)
NRT-PEK CA Y (Stopover - 3 days)
PEK-ORD UA J (3hr20 layover)
ORD-YUL AC Y

YYZ-ORD AC J
ORD-FRA LH F
FRA-CPH LH J
Departing next Tuesday.
62.5K + $576.46 in scamcharges/taxes.
Have never regretted paying the premium to redeem on Lufthansa First. The initial wallet pain/sticker shock is quickly forgotten once I step into the cabin or the FCT.
