Routes that do not have fuel surcharges (YQ) when operated by carriers that normally charge YQ:

1. USA-Germany-Other country. If only the Germany-other country segment is on LH it does not have YQ. E.g. DFW-FRA-BLR with TATL on UA and FRA-BLR on LH.
2. USA-Canada-Other country. The USA-Canada segment on AC does not have YQ if the Canada-Other country segment is operated by a carrier that does not charge YQ. E.g. DFW-YYZ-ADD.

Congrats, interestingly no YQ for AC SFO-YYZ (probably due to UA on long-haul? or because of Japan)

where my simple YYZ-TPE on BR, TPE-LAX on BR, AC LAX-YYZ has a $40 YQ
So weird

My honest suspicion is since both of the AC flights are codeshared with UA, that it's UA who provided the ticket and thus, no YQ. But I'm new here, so don't quote me on that.

I'll take the happy fluke.

Nice, its too bad that AC/LH feel the need to gouache TATL customers with YQ... instead of covering their costs like LO, they try and make money off of people on supposedly free tickets. Although YQ free is the way to go I could certainly tolerate a 67$ fee on such a trip (especially on an 87 route)

There is no such thing as codeshares on awards.
Also UA cannot provide a ticket when using Aeroplan points.
All tickets are issued by Air Canada, who also keeps any surcharges thet collect, except actual govt taxes.

AE J Class FEES ETC OUTRAGEOUS

I am on the floor.. the fees for me to redeem 90K for a "free" ticket to LHR are over $1,200. THIS IS OUTRAGEOUS and damn near the price of a Tango ticket.

I checked fees for a Y ticket and they are about half, and also 1/3 of the miles right now. Hello. what is wrong with this picture?

This is not the deal I signed up for and have given thousands and thousands of my dollars for. UAL charges virtually no fees in comparison but I cannot get a J ticket out of them for my October dates.

I have been more than a good loyal customer with AC and I am closing in on the 2 Milllion Mile mark and a SE as long as I can remember. I hope some sense will come to the brain trust at AC/AE as this is nothing but a major revenue grab.

As A result I have just purchased a J fare to China but on another airline also at a fraction of ACs lowest fare. Sorry my loyal airline but you have shafted me and devalued my 1.4 million miles.

That is crazy! But not surprising.

The government (not this one because they do nothing but protect AC) needs to put an end to Fuel Surcharges.

Not like has it been.....I first noticed it in May when booking a ticket to CDG via BRU, fees were over $1200 and I blamed that on Brussels Airlines, but this flight I am looking at is pure AC. For a while fees were as high as $700, but now almost double that.

OUTRAGEOUS. Aeroplan is dead and the funeral should be soon.

As an SE it's cheaper for you to buy a Flex fare and use eUpgrades.

Also the reason nobody from AE/AIMIA will come onto FT.

If it's a regular award and not a super elite priority award, you can book the AC flight using United miles no problem.

Should be lots of premium TK awards ex-YUL with the new route starting out. From the west coast, SFO is easy to get. Not sure if they're starting to fly ex-YVR this year or next but that will be a source of good J to Europe (and Asia/Africa) via IST.

Just as a sample, the following are all taken from the same dates and flights, April 13 and 20, 2015.

BOOKING WITH AEROPLAN POINTS

YYZ-LHR return, economy, $732 in misc fees.

YYZ-LHR return, business, $1245 in misc fees.

BOOKING WITH CASH

YYZ-LHR return, economy, $271 in misc fees, total cost $882

YYZ-LHR return, business, $403 in misc fees, total cost $5186

So basically, your 60,000 AP points are worth $150 in Economy, or about 0.25 cents per point against the cash fare.

In business, even with the surcharge, 90,000 AP points are worth about 4.4 cents per point against the cash fare.

Obviously varies by dates and routes, but you get the idea.
