East destinations - Pittsburgh?
I bumped this up on an old topic, but thout it'd be best if I started another thread....
horizonair mentioned a rumor about adding Pittsburgh to the route system this year. Is this still a viable rumor?
I've been flying America West out to PIT (from SEA via PHX), and would love to see AS add this as a destination.

Pittsburgh seems kinda far for a Horizon Air flight. I for one would not want to fly that route on a smaller Horizon jet. Why would Horizon be looking to branch out this far to the east, when it really should be Alaska that would be looking to get into that market?

I think the reference was to horizonair the FT member, not Horizon Air the airline. QX has nothing in the fleet that's make SEA-PIT anyway. It'd definitely be an AS run with one of the NG 737s.
PIT hadn't crossed my mind as a new AS station, but it'd be interesting... a shot across USAirways' bow, of course... and it would continue the recent AS pattern of tweaking most majors' hubs as they expand east, but not NW.

That makes sense, Bear. I was a bit confused on the horizonair reference and flying to Pitt. But in regards to AS flying to Pitt, maybe I'm wrong (and no offense to anyone), but Pitt isn't exactly a destination of choice, and it seems as though AS is choosing it's Eastern expansion with that in mind. NYC, Miami, Chicago, Denver: definitely destinations of choice. Pittsburgh, not exactly.

If anyone would be adding a SEA/PDX to PIT route, it would be United, as that is a central hub for US Air, which is a partner for UA.
If AS adds anything east of the Mississippi, I'd like it to be ORD, as I expect even with the UA competition, it could do well (how well does SEA-DEN do?). Though perhaps Albany might be a nice choice, as well, as with it, EWR, IAD/DCA, and BOS you are within driving distance of most of the upper east coast.

US does already offer SEA-PIT nonstops, the only carrier to do so, so UA has no incentive to duplicate that route.
I can't imagine AS opening SEA-ORD because UA and AA have that route so saturated, plus WN offers SEA-MDW. AS does ORD-ANC instead. The whole AS expansion strategy is to tweak the majors but not butt them in the stomach.

The reason that I think PIT/PHL as a possible destination, is that since it is USAir's mega hub, fares tend to be higher in those markets...thus we would have higher fares as well...Although I do agree that it is not the most glamorous destination, If the yield is there, we could make money. And I think that is what we are looking for right now..to make money..I don't think that ORD is in the picture right now, as we codeshare with AA on their flights, and I don't know how well AA would take to us entering one of their strongholds...Miami doesn't really count, as they were not flying to Seattle non-stop.

If anything I would believe AS would add Philadelphia before it would ever consider Pittsburg. Philadelphia is a much larger market and offers a unique relationship to the New York area, a large business attraction, as well as its own interesting tourist attractions. I'd much rather see Philadelphia than Pittsburg, or even the often mentioned Atlanta or Orlando.
