With airlines, no show = no miles, even if you give up the ticket.

WIth hotels, do you get points without the stay?

But I suppose if you check in then don't stay, the miles will post.

With Hilton HHonors, I have received credit for no-shows that were guaranteed and charged to my credit card. I believe others have been able to do that also.

I *think* the rules (and I can't speak for all programs) are that you get points for the $ spent but you aren't supposed to get stay credit. Of course, some hotels mispost and you do get the stay credit.

I know I once forgot to cancel a reservation from a Starwood Hotel (ended up staying with Hilton) and they charged me for the one night and I received points for the no show.

Some hotels (actually, more accurate to say some front desk clerks) will let you check in over the phone.
