How about this as part of a solution...
I know this doesn't solve all of the concerns everyone has with the new changes, but its a partial solution. I am curious what everyone thinks.
The new U program allows me to acrue miles for free travel regardless of my fare class but dis-allows them to be used for elite status. How about giving the flier a choice.
I personally don't care much about free travel as all my travel is covered by my company. What concerns me, because I fly so much is preferred check-in, preferred boarding and upgrades when I can get them. So let me decide what my miles/segments are used for.
When I sign up for a FF program I set my preferences. Do my miles get credited to an account for future free travel, or used to give me elite status. Or perhaps a third option would be to split the miles 50/50, half for free travel the other half for elite status.
Does this sound resonable? Seems to me it might offer everyone something. I know it doesn't resolve the refundable/use it or lose it issue but it might go a long way to calming some of use FF down.
I would like to hear what others think of this plan.
See ya in the air....

I have mixed feelings about your program and the airline decision.
In my case I care a lot abou the miles since I pay for my own tickets and I only fly for fun to see the world. I couldn't care less about upgrades. I don't mind picking up my backpack and take couch to India, it's the fun of seing India not on flying wiht Caviar. I kept AA Plat even though AA is a hassle for me since there are no direct flights either from Denver and Baltimore where I lived and live now. I doesn't matter if we are paying full or cheap fares, what matters is that we are loyal to the airline and that we are flying with them and giving them business so there should be a reward for that adn I love the 100%bounus miles for Plat!!!!!!!!!! that means more travel......
Now with their stand by and nonrefundable issue I'm thinkning in changing airlines in 2003!!!!
