AA will let you.
Also, on AA you can change times and dates of award travel without penalty, just not the cities.

UA allows stop over in west coast too.

We have a FF trip scheduled on United in May to Hawaii. On the return we will stop in Los Angeles and drive to Las Vegas. Easy 5 hour drive. We did this on the return leg from Australia last year and it worked great. Returned to LA a day ahead of last leg to JFK and stayed at airport hotel.
