I am going to LAX for a student conference. details:
departing: DTW-LAX, 26-28/Dec
returning: LAX-DTW, 3(preferred)-7/Jan
Preferred airline: AA (4500miles to become Gold)
other airline have mile a/c: UA/NW
Goal: Maximizing the miles with cheapest ticket, possible more "legs"
Any Route and deal suggestion are welcome!

Here's a neat trick. For 12/27 to 1/3 from Expedia:
DTW-ORD-LAX on AA is $427 RT
DTW-ORD-LAX-LAS is only $347 RT
LAS-SJC-LAX is $84 RT.
Booking two full round trips may be a Saturday night stay violation, but booking an interesting DTW-LAS-LAX-DTW circle trip is certainly legal. You may have to stay 4 hours in Vegas, though, which isn't bad at all. Of course, you'll book it as:
DTW-ORD-LAX-LAS -SJC-LAX -DFW-ORD-DTW. That's eight segments, about 5500 miles. But you'll have trouble booking that on aa.com since it won't offer you flights with double-connections if enough flights with single connections are available.

check out www.digitalcity.com/detroit/travel this will give you a list of fares to from detroit daily...
I found a fare to LAX from DTW for $158 RT last week on American!
Remember that airline fares change at least 3 times a day during the week.

I think so a rt DTW-LAS will like this?
27/9 DTW-ORD-LAX-LAS
27/9 +4hours -SJC-LAX
STOPOVER for my "actual distination"
1/3 lax-DFW-ORD-DTW.
1.Is that right? Is then what I need to pay is just a RT DTW-LAS price?
2.I have a long stopover at lax, will AA charge me a lot for that?
3. why I cannot do the return as the "to" flight so I can get more segment? Is that because AA will consider my "destination" is LAS so I cannot goto LAS again?
Sorry for my silly questions and Thanks for great help!

Is there ANY way to book these complicated mileage run routes on AA.com? Even though the goal of a mileage run is to maximize actual miles flown for elite status it would be great to get the 2000 mile online booking bonus.
Or am I asking too much?!?
