Would this be legal ticketing?
Am down in New Zealand for about a year on an award ticket from the USA. Have realised that need to be in Europe for part of the northern summer and the RTW prices down here are cheap. If I stopped in the US city where my award ticket originated from on my RTW, would I be falling afoul of ticketing regulations like back-to-back? Not sure if such rules would apply to award tickets although the RTW would be a paid ticket.

I can't see any way this would be a violation. Back to back rules are in place to prevent using multiple tickets to circumvent the rules in the pricing structure. This isn't likely on an award, and even if your award ticket was paid, you're not prohibited from travelling back to your origination city for whatever reason.
