Professional Organizer?
Has anybody hired a professional organizer before? What was your experience? Would you recommend it? Did it help?
Needless to say - I'm looking for somebody to help me a bit but thought I'd see if anybody has had any experience with this. Thanks!

Ha. ha, the guys would be hiding all the broken electronics and the ladies would have a secret stash of things that will never fit again. Even I have a 1978 pair of very tight jeans that I fantasize I can fit into again before I die...

Congratulations on trying to organize your life! You might also want to check out the national association of professional organizers:
www.napo.net
Last night I was just listening to an interesting show on NPR about "Hoarding".
http://www.lcmedia.com/mind403.htm
They mentioned that in some extreme cases, people cannot sleep in their bed or eat at their kitchen table because they have so much stuff!
Good luck!

Tried it and loved it
I had a professional organizer go through our home right before moving. I had just given birth to my third baby by C-section and was in no shape, mental or physical to do any kind of organizing or getting the house in Massachusetts ready to sell.
She went through all the closets, pulled out each and every item, we made a decision about weather it was worth keeping, recycling (i.e. prom dress made into pillow cover type of recycling), giving away. When we were finished, my husband had at least three more feet of clothes hanging in the closet than I did. She hauled away all the old business suits, out of style/worn stuff. Made sure they went to a local charity which provides business clothes and accessories for working women and gave me the receipt for the donations.
It was such a good feeling to get rid of so much old stuff you didn't need.
If you can find someone good, it is well worth the money. I think she called her business something like Helping Hands. Good luck.

All (even wharvey ). . thanks for your messages!
I have hired a professional organizer who will be arriving this Wednesday. I'll let you know what happens and how this works. BTW - the charity that takes clothes that you can use for interviews is called Dress for Success. It is an organization that does a great job with women who are trying to move into a new job and cannot afford appropriate clothing (homeless, transitional, etc.).
