WestJet's regional pilots could strike by mid-April as negotiations 'drag along'

Negotiations between WestJet and its regional pilots continue to “drag along,” according to WestJet Encore pilots, with a strike possible as soon as mid-April.
A federal conciliation officer was appointed in January, but the WestJet Encore pilot group says it hasn’t helped negotiations with the Calgary-based airline. More than 300 pilots could go on strike by 12:01 a.m. on April 17 if an agreement isn’t reached, the Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA) said Monday.

WestJet Encore Pilots Vote to Authorize Strike
One week into the 21-day cooling off period, WestJet Encore pilots, represented by the Air Line Pilots Association, Int’l (ALPA), sent a clear message to WestJet management. Of the 89 percent of pilots who took part in a strike-authorization vote, 97 percent voted in favour of a strike, if required.
WestJet Encore pilots are unified in their efforts to secure a contract that will bring stability to their careers and the airline. However, should the pilots and WestJet management fail to negotiate a new collective agreement by April 17, 2024, a strike or lockout could disrupt passenger services.

According to the Calgary Herald:
WestJet Encore pilots have voted to approve an agreement in principle with the Calgary-based airline’s executive team, a signal that a forthcoming strike date could be avoided.
The two parties have been locked in negotiations for several months, with the pilots’ April 15 strike date just a week away.
While contract language still needs to be finalized, representatives for both sides have reached the agreement on “most of the terms and conditions,” the Association of Air Line Pilots wrote in a Monday statement.
