WestJet's regional pilots could strike by mid-April as negotiations 'drag along'

https://edmontonjournal.com/business...5-3285c8e6d727

Negotiations between WestJet and its regional pilots continue to “drag along,” according to WestJet Encore pilots, with a strike possible as soon as mid-April.

A federal conciliation officer was appointed in January, but the WestJet Encore pilot group says it hasn’t helped negotiations with the Calgary-based airline. More than 300 pilots could go on strike by 12:01 a.m. on April 17 if an agreement isn’t reached, the Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA) said Monday.

WestJet Encore Pilots Vote to Authorize Strike

One week into the 21-day cooling off period, WestJet Encore pilots, represented by the Air Line Pilots Association, Int’l (ALPA), sent a clear message to WestJet management. Of the 89 percent of pilots who took part in a strike-authorization vote, 97 percent voted in favour of a strike, if required.

WestJet Encore pilots are unified in their efforts to secure a contract that will bring stability to their careers and the airline. However, should the pilots and WestJet management fail to negotiate a new collective agreement by April 17, 2024, a strike or lockout could disrupt passenger services.

According to the Calgary Herald:

WestJet Encore pilots have voted to approve an agreement in principle with the Calgary-based airline’s executive team, a signal that a forthcoming strike date could be avoided.

The two parties have been locked in negotiations for several months, with the pilots’ April 15 strike date just a week away.

While contract language still needs to be finalized, representatives for both sides have reached the agreement on “most of the terms and conditions,” the Association of Air Line Pilots wrote in a Monday statement.

WestJet Encore Pilot Leaders Approve Agreement in Principle

Discussions are ongoing as the parties work to finalize contract language for a full tentative agreement (TA) for membership ratification.

...

While representatives for both sides have reached an AIP on most of the terms and conditions, contract language is still being finalized.

Yes in the excitement; I should have stated “agreement in principle” as opposed to “tentative agreement”.

I am pleased that it is at the stage to announce this.

WestJet issues advance lockout notification to its Encore Pilot union, ALPA

WestJet issues advance lockout notification to its Encore Pilot union, ALPA

Another month, another WestJet lockout.
As a result of today's lockout notice, a work stoppage could occur as early as Saturday, June 1, 2024, at 6 p.m. MT, unless a deal is reached.
I note that this is in response to/in concert with ALPA's strike notice, also given today: WestJet Encore Pilots File 72-Hour Strike Notice

Details of ticket flexibility arrangements etc. are now on WestJet's Guest Updates page.
