SeaTac 3rd Runway

Listening to Channel 9 on United last night I was surprised to hear upon our approach into Seattle that we were cleared for landing on runway 16C

16C?

Yup. and several other pilots corrected themselves if they said "16R" by mistake.

Turns out the FAA sheet updated for Sept 28th has the new 3rd runway penciled in (under construction) and the "old" 34L/16R has been renamed 34C/16C.

Cheers!

This is odd. According to this link under the FAQ section for Sea-Tac's 3rd Runway Project, the estimated time of completion isn't until late 2008.

Yes it's coming along but not even close to completion yet. It is surprising they'd do re-numbering so far in advance.

The OP didn't say it was done, just that the current runways were renamed as part of the project.

According to official FAA diagrams, it has indeed been renamed "C". This may have occured on Sept 28th when the diagram was refreshed:

Flew into SEA mid-day Friday, and we too were cleared for landing on "16 Center."

Much, much better to do this now than to wait until the new runway opens. Kudos to SEA management, or the FAA, whomever came up with this. ^

The Port has turned the new runway over to the FAA for testing.

I've flown out of SEA the last two Saturdays and enjoyed nice window seat views of the new runway, noticing how "completed" it looked. I was also checking out Taxiway Tango, the "other" runway at SEA...
