Hotel in Phoenix
I'm looking for some suggestions for a cheapish hotel in Phoenix in September.
Also, some suggetsions for what to do for 5 days when there.
Tempe sounds like quite a trendy place, is this true?

More information would be helpful. Since Phoenix (and surrounding areas) have a tourist draw, it really depends are 1) where you want to be, and 2) what you want to do. Also, what is "cheapish" to you.
There are some great *values* in the Phoenix area during summer (and into early) September, but more information is really necessary for recommendations.

I saw this on google earth.
Apparently, its a bit of a dump though according to tripadvisor. Anyone actually stayed there?
I actually just found out that I can get way way reduced rates through my credit card at Hospitality Suites in Scottsdale.
Any views on that?

tempe is a young college area and mill ave is the only trendy part of the area
scottsdale is popular as well, but unless you're near old town or fashion square there's not much there either beside rich old ladies named Muffy and their country clubs.
Don't count out the resorts like the Pointe, the Buttes, or Gainey Ranch since in the summer time they're very far off peak. Last year the Princess had a nice deal with breakfast for about $70-80/night (in July though) if my customers were telling the truth.

Are you coming alone or with friends/family
Phoenix is over 100 miles square.
Tempe in Sept will basically have college kids going back to school
Mill Ave is busy in the evenings - but not much else to do
Public transportation in Phoenix sucks
Do you want to play golf, swim, go see Frank Lloyd Wright Architecture, go up to the Grand Canyon, Sedona -etc

Don't count out Priceline. September is still the "hot" season and I have had great luck getting very nice (4 star) hotels in the great PHX area (I prefer Scottsdale/Paradise Valley but there are tons of other areas) for way under $100. My lowest ever (again, for very nice 4-star resorts) were $58 and $65 a night during hot season.

If you're renting a car, I would look at staying in the Old Town Scottsdale area. It's not a far drive from Tempe, and the area has plenty of nightlife(Sugar Daddy's, Sandbar, etc).
I stay at a number of hotels in that area. The Hilton Garden Inn Old Town is a great hotel. It's within walking distance of many bars and restaurants.
