Golden Eagle Pass
How does the Golden Eagle Pass work? The link mentions a fee of $65. The passport is valid one year after date of issue.
If I understand the description correctly:
1.) It's possible to buy the pass in any NP that has entrance fees.
2.) The owner and his (rented) car is included
3.) Spouse, parents and children are included if travelling with the pass owner in the same car
4.) A friend is NOT included if travelling in the same car.
Can anybody confirm - especially 3.) and 4.) - if I did understand the pass correctly. What's best for the friend in 4.): buy his/her own pass?

Looking a the text, it covers everyone in the vehicle for admission wherever the charge is per vehicle regardless of number of occupants (up to a resonable limit).
The non-relative charge only comes when the admission is per person, and I suspect charged only at places where you have to enter on foot.
If you are going to National Parks only and not to any Bureau of Land Management, Fish & Wildlife Service and/or Forest Service pay facilities, the National Parks Pass may be a better option. I also see that there are regional annual passes which may be better if you don't plan on using the pass in other parts of the U.S. within a year of issuance.

terenz, thanks for your help.
The National Parks Pass is exactly what we need. We'll go only into National Parks and we'll visit more areas (at least Wyoming, Arizona/Utah/..., and Florida; the one time flat fee seams to be alright).
