Car in PHX
I need a car at PHX for 12 days. The best rate I have found so far is $345 (includes all taxes, fees, surcharges, and all other add ons - sheesh! These costs alone were about $120)
This rental is from Alamo with the Costco discount.
Anyone know how to get a cheaper car? I have not been successful on priceline yet.

go to the flyertalk Avis forum and check out some of the discount codes listed on that forum - I usually get a great deal by using one of the listed codes - results vary from location to location, so try several and see what you get - I'm not sure if this link will work or not but here goes:

Rental cars in PHX at certain times of the year is got to be the most expensive in the US (even more than FL during Easter/Xmas)
I suspect there is a certain amount of price fixing and National/Alamo is independently owned which does not help.

Mikey, see if your hotel has an off-airport rental company in-house--many do, especially the resorts. If not, I could get you phone numbers for a couple. There are also some el-cheapos near the airport, like ACE and Resort.
Another, more fun strategy would be to rent in Vegas, where they are usually cheap, and drive down--maybe 5 hours on a good day. Then, plan some fun time on the front or back end.

Thanks j379pa and others!
I just called my resort - they said they do not have a rental car agency on site. Also - they said that they pick up from the airport, but do not drop off at the airport - weird, huh?
Anyay - so far the $345 with Alamo is the best I can find. Even beats Fox. I have not tried ACE or Regency - do they pick up folks at the airport, or do I need to take a cab to get to them?

Whatever you do, DON'T rent your car at the airport. The extortionate taxes and fees will shoot your final total out of sight. A friend of mine has the Avis location at about 300 East Bell, with good cars. You could also try Enterprise, with locations around town. Good luck. E-mail me directly if you have other questions.

After going through a whole bunch of different combo's of rental locations, companies, and discount codes I ended up just bidding on Priceline and was really happy with what I ended up with:
I got a midsize/intermediate, to be picked up at the airport (convenient), for 7 days starting next Tuesday for a total of $261.09. This resulted from a bid of $25 per day plus all the taxes and add-ons. If you're not too fussy about the company or the actual car this seemed like a great way to do it.
