Tornado at DEN

At MCI, just informed (5:30PM CDT) that there's a ground hold at DEN, since a tornado touched down at the airport itself, along with very heavy hail. If you're planning on going through DEN tonight, might want to reconsider.

Wow... so they really mean business with those shelter signs on the toilets! Hope everyone is safe.

i am not sure yet, but i don't think this affected the terminal. remember that the airport grounds at DEN are enormous -- IIRC they cover something like 35,000 acres which is more than double the size of Manhattan. so, a tornado "at the airport" might mean a lot of things.

nonetheless, i hope my sources are right and that it was far from the terminal and everyone there is safe.

Saw a picture of it over on FB and definitely scary looking (and looks like the tornado shelters at the airport are being put to good use)

Although I hope the tornado felt free to have its way with any empty RJs hanging around the airport...

No "official" observation of any tornadoes, although certainly some really impressive wind shifts/gust as well as quite an assortment of precipitation.

Only at the Denver airport does this pass for "Spring"

I'm here now after spending 45 min in the train "basement" due to the warning. Many people were missing shoes, luggage, etc as they forced us to "drop everything" and get down there. Took about 60 min after they let us go to get back thru. My bags were literally in the xray machine so took me a bit longer.

I can say I have NEVER heard it rain so loud before. There were sheets of ice sliding off the roof. Everyone was in awe.

If it were a typical day at DIA, then there would be quite a few RJs.

There are several pictures on this page. They were referring to the storm as a 'supercell'. Several of the photos show the cluster of hotels which are about halfway between the airport and I-70. I hope you're all ok.

Seems to dispute the report seen elsewhere.
