VA allow same-day flight changes?
Does VA allow same-day changes to non-stops as long as your destination remains the same? Currently we're booked on a ZQN-BNE-SYD routing, though ideally we'd like to take the non-stop ZQN-SYD if there's still J seats left on day of departure. We used miles (Delta Skymiles) to book these flights and the only option available was thru BNE.
Appreciate any info/help on whether we could change to the non-stop on the day of departure.

Id say youll have a tough time unless ZQN-BNE is overbooked (unlikely).
Until late 2016, VA usually accommodated same-day flight changes but now this Fly Ahead perk is limited to Velocity Golds and Platinums, and all other pax need to pay any applicable change fee. However Ive never tried Fly Ahead on a changed routing as well. Trying to do it on an award booked with partner miles makes it even more challenging.
I suspect youve got a very slim chance of being able to do this but it never hurts to ask at check-in.

In my experience VA is pretty accommodating to J pax and I've never been treated as an inferior J pax just because I was on an award. So, I'd say you have a decent shot, but only because you are in J. So definitely ask.

At ZQN for VA the airport staff will likely be Air NZ. Or a contracted 3rd party.
Given the few VA flights from ZQN very unlikely will be people employed by VA.
That will make is harder to change at the airport.
Does DL now show an award available for ZQN-SYD?

So keep looking for a non-stop award flight with DL ff miles.
What ever flight you have now could change.
Trans Tasman flights are changing due to the impending Air NZ-VA divorce, Air NZ-QF becoming TT friends (again) and the QF-EK changes from 31 March 2018.

I definitely will, though it's not likely to have award space open as 6 out of 8 seats are booked in the J cabin on the non-stop VA ZQN-SYD flights. So that's why I was hoping for the same day change option as I think our only chance at getting on the flight is if they don't sell the last 2 seats or there's no-shows in J class.
