I haven't flown VA yet, so I am not familiar with their upgrade system. After having read this whole thread I still couldn't find the right strategy for my situation:
Flying SYD-AYQ in 10 days on an E190, 2 pax, booked in Economy Saver.
The flight is sold out in Business with not many seats left in Economy, Experflyer shows:
Still, I received the invitation to bid for an upgrade today. The bid I can enter ranges from AUD 200 to AUD 490 per pax.
I don't see much of a chance of getting an upgrade as the flight is currently sold out in C.
We already have exit row seats and can (presumably) use priority check-in and lounge in SYD as AB topbonus Platinum, but would still appreciate the seat upgrade on this 3,5 hour flight.
What would be your strategy for the bid?

E190 only have 2/2 in economy which are pretty much the same seats as the Biz class seats.
You get lounge and baggage bennies anyway it seems?
Not sure what your Status gets, but we can always gets row 3 as Plats which have a ton of room, and on many flights Virgin do not SELL Biz on E190s, so we sit in row 1 and 2 anyway - all bookable in advance. (But this does not apply to ASP it seems.)
For the sake of a slightly better meal, I would not be paying $300 more!

I bid minimum amount for PER-SYD which was ~$400something. Realistically I don't feel I need anything business class for travel within Australia but I was keen to try 'The Business.' Bid got accepted and it was one of the cheapest ways to get into the new seat.
