Virgin Australia Buys Controlling stake in Tiger Australia
Big news released a few hours ago to the Australian Stock Exchange, VA has brought 60% of TT. In effect Australia has returned to a two airlines policy, with Qantas and Virgin now both controlling LCCs.

I saw that, I wonder what the move is. I can only hazard a guess that they want to offload whatever 'low-cost' attributes they might still have over to TT and focus on this premium service they're trying to purport

I assume an announcement that VA will go full service will follow shortly, not sure if this will include free checked-baggage but would solve the confusion where VA offers free food in economy on some routes but not others.
From a miles perspective, will be very interesting to see if there is some jetstar like arrangement where you can earn velocity points and status credits for an extra fee.

In a stunning round of transactions this morning, Virgin Australia has sold a 10 per cent stake to Singapore Airlines, bought 60 per cent of Tiger Airways, and is looking to spend $99m on a takeover of regional carrier Skywest.

Plane talking Blog suggests it will be a less integrated partnership than Qantas and Jetstar, with a separate board and the chairman alternating between Tiger Singapore and Virgin Australia.

So long as it avoids the QF wasting disease (erosion of QF routes/ service and replacement with inferior JetStar offerings), I will be happy.

Australian Business Traveller quotes VA CEO John Borghetti on Velocity earn:
http://www.ausbt.com.au/virgin-austr...n=home-flipper
Suggests that some points earn or redemption may be available even without a codeshare.
However, he wouldn't be drawn to comment on if Velocity points might be earned on Tiger flights, saying that while "Velocity is a very separate program to Tiger, we'll talk about that going forward, but we're not ready to talk about that yet."

Oh, oh.
Virgin is my preferred discount domestic airline (Jetstar = 'Airline of last resort'). However that attitude didn't even consider Tiger as an option - never bothered to even look at schedules or fares.
If Virgin pushes me to Tiger for cheaper fasres, they have lost me entirely; Jetstar, you'll be looking good!
Tiger = never, ever, ever.

Borgetti did a very interesting TV interview on this a day or so back.
What interested me was SQ now owns part of Virgin.
Wonder if we will see SQ flights counting toward Virgin Status credits?
Can't imagine that will not be on the cards?

You've been able to earn virgin SCs on SQ for the best part of a year or more.
