Companion ticket + cancelling credit card + flying

Companion ticket + cancelling credit card + flying
Just got off the phone with a bunch of different customer service agents, and none seemed confident and I wasn't confident in the answers I got. Here's my scenario:
I want to cancel my Virgin credit card before the fee hits July 1
I still have a $150 off companion ticket to use
By now I'm sure you understand my question. The answer that I think is correct after my conversations is that I need my credit card in order to book the flight. However after it's booked I can cancel the card and still fly. So, my appropriate course of action should be:
Book a flight before I cancel
Cancel before 7/1
Fly anytime after 7/1
Does that sound right?
