How do points transfer?

I've read the FAQ about how Virgin America points can transfer to other Virgin airlines. But I'm still unclear how this works.

Does someone have experience buying a Virgin Atlantic flight using Virgin America Points? Is it an equal transfer? Must it be done over the phone?

Clarification

I'll add clarification in case I didn't ask the question correctly. I Have the choice to fly Virgin America regularly, but am only interested if I can use miles to fly overseas later on. Can you buy Virgin Atlantic tickets using Virgin America miles?

They cannot be transferred to other airlines, at least not right now.

Only earn, but not redeem?

So Virgin America will let you earn elevate points on their sister airlines. http://www.virginamerica.com/frequen...-partners.html

But you cant use those elevate points to fly on these same airlines? That is screwy. Makes it much less attractive.
