I realize the site http://travel.state.gov/passport/fri/add/add_850.html says 2-4 pages or less, but that's really just a guideline to cut down on unnecessary requests. It not a firm rule. You'll note that there are no restrictions on the actual form.

I just renewed my passport. Total time from mailbox to mailbox, four weeks, regular service. ^

I received a 52 page passport by sending in a "Request extra pages" form and a note requesting extra pages along with my old passport, passport renewal form and a check. Otherwise, State will send you a 24 page skinny passport.

Umm, last I looked to get extra pages put into a passport, the cost was FREE!

In the US you have to mail it in; overseas, head to the nearest US Consulate/Embassy and make an appointment. Last time I needed pages, I made an appointment with the Hong Kong US Consulate and the whole process took 19 minutes. How much? FREEEE! :p

I am renewing my almost-full passport, due to expire within 6 months.

My international travel has increased somewhat over the past couple years (and continues to do so), so I would like to request extra pages from the get-go.

I went to the State Dept. website on How to add extra pages to your passport

It reads:
So my question is whether 'applicable fees' means I need to add $82 to the passport renewal fee (for 'adding Visa pages') or if it is a free service when renewing. I called and was told that you couldn't get extra pages when renewing (that I'd have to send it back later), and so I read the website. The representative then said well then send in the $82. I asked for a supervisor but was disconnected.

I figure someone here might have been through this recently. Should I
A) send in the renewal with a letter requesting additional pages, but not the extra $82
B) send in the renewal with $82 extra included in the check
C) something else?

When I filled out the form to renewal there was a box to check for a 52-page book, nothing mentioned about the $82 fee. I'm guessing it's free, that it just costs when you have them added later (although I had it done in my old book for free and in 20 minutes at the embassy in London before the fees went into effect.)

The forms just changed- they didn't have that option when I filled it out! Seems like there's no charge for requesting them at time of issuance, as you guess.

I decided that I would get a standard passport and either add pages or just renew early if I fill it up. I spoke to some colleagues who had extra pages, and they didn't like the added heft. Not sure that matters for me, but didn't feel like going through the hassle.

Fee or Free for adding extra pages at a US embassy/consulate?
 

When I had extra pages added to my passport at the US embassy in EZE a few years ago, there was no charge. I also believe that at that time, this service was free at the US Passport Center.

Now the US Passport Center has a fee of $82 for the service (as well as recommending several weeks (!) for fulfillment.

So I am wondering if the service at an embassy or consulate is still free or if they charge the same $82. I am thinking of taking an extra day on one of my trips and doing this at the consulate simply to save the wait time, but wondering if I need to bring an extra US $100 along for the cost.

The time has come for my wife to get extra pages in her passport. There is now a checkbox at the top of the DS-4085 form that allows one to request 52 pages on that as well. ^^

Extra pages may well have been $82 since last year, but I'm still angry about it!

It used to be that you got to add extra page for free twice, and then you just paid for a new passport.

I'm down to 2 pages free. I have already three overseas trips booked. The third trip is South Africa, and I know they want four clean pages. Not mad at them. Mad at my cheap ... government!

Apologies if this has been posted earlier, but unless you are prepared to wait 4 to 5 weeks for the passport to be returned with extra pages, you should pay the extra $72.72 for expedited service.

The instructions stated that if you were leaving within 2 weeks you should make an appointment to come in and add pages in person. As I had four weeks before leaving I sent it in using regular service. When it was received and posted on the website 3 days later it stated that normal processing was four to five weeks. I asked to add expedited service but the CSR (Phone service was very polite and efficient, but not accurate) said I should wait a week. After no progress I called again after 5 days and the CSR I spoke to told me if I wanted assurance that I would get it back on time I should request expedited service immediately, as it might not be available if I called the next day. So I did, asking him to read back the cc number I gave him. Later that evening the service center called and said they had an incorrect cc number. They then corrected it, but the next morning they called again as they had made a different error in transcribing the number. Finally getting it right they Fedex'ed it and I got it the next day 2 1/2 weeks ahead of my trip.
