Lost Passport appointment window
To keep things brief, my family has a trip coming up on Saturday to fly to DR, and when I went to the safe to get our passports, mine was missing. Likely it is misplaced, but we have searched the whole house up and down to no avail. Perhaps accidentally thrown away during a recent purge of the file cabinet...
Anyway, I have been searching hourly/daily on the appointment site of the state department and much to my surprise an appointment came available for Detroit tomorrow at 9:30a. The problem is it is more than 72 hours before my flight (despite putting in my travel dates). It's a 5 hour drive and I'd hate to get there to be turned away, but I'm willing to risk it at this point.
So my question- does anyone know for certain if the trip would be useless? Would I possibly be able to book an appointment if they turn me away? Any thoughts on the matter would be appreciated.
No snark- please.

There is no way to predict what will happen because it is down to one individual staff member and how they treat you.
Look at it the other way round. If you don't try, you won't be traveling.

I'm happy to report that while gathering the documents needed for the appointment, my wife found my passport- in a location 4 of us have looked in at least a dozen times. Wanted to close the loop- and appreciate your response, Often1. I felt the same way.

Did you actually report your passport as lost to the Passport Office?
Once you’ve done that it automatically invalidates the lost passport.
So you might still need that appointment! And if you don’t need the slot please remember to cancel it so someone else could still use it.

UK- great points. I did cancel it as soon as we found it- so hopefully someone was able to use it. While I used the online tool for filling in the DS-11 and DS-64, I did not submit it online. I do plan to call the passport office later today to be 100% certain.
