29 days door to door

02/14 Mailed in routine application to PA from MO, old passport was already expired by a week, standard mail--money order, applying for 52 page passport book, put my travel date of departure on app
2/17 Package delivered per tracking
2/18 Signed up for email alerts, no confirmation email
2/20 Online status said processing
3/12 Finally received email saying it was processing with locator number
3/12 Email saying passport was printed est. arrival 3/18/2019 with tracking number
3/13 Received another email saying est. arrival 3/20/2019 with same tracking number
3/14 Tracking available via USPS saying est. arrival 3/15/2019
3/15 New 52 page passport book delivered
**Awaiting old passport as it has visas I need, but from the thread appears the return of that isn't taking longer than a week; very pleased
Came to this page daily while anxiously waiting for my passport so wanted to share my wait time, thank you to everyone!

Feb 19 - Mailed in my application (standard processing)
Feb 22 - Passport was received
Feb 26 - Received email confirmation that passport status is processing

Since then, it still says processing and no further updates. I am freaking out since my trip is next week on 3/27. Yes, I realize now that I should have done expedited from the beginning, but I was misguided in reading many threads which stated that standard processing usually takes 3 weeks (now I know not to believe this is always the case and to expect the worst). Last Wednesday (5 days ago), I called the passport office to pay to update to expedited services with the overnight delivery ($76), and since then, absolutely nothing has changed in the status (still says processing under standard delivery, no charge to my credit card). I have called 2 times since, with the operators simply stating to keep an eye out and call back. This is upsetting that I'm trying to take extra precaution to speed up the process and now that I have a week left til my trip, still nothing has been changed. Also, it appears there are others in this thread who applied after me and have already received their new passport, which is worrisome.

Just a word of advice for anyone reading this, pay the expedited service if your trip is 4-6 weeks away because there are no guarantees.

I hope you get it in time as well. I mailed my passport to Phily thinking that standard would take 3 weeks and called the day I got the email it was processing to have it expedited. They said it needs to be approved but I'll call again. My trip is on 4/11 and I got an email that it would be processing on 3/15.

Thanks, I hope I do as well! You should have better luck than me since you were smart to expedite it immediately. I plan to call back tomorrow morning since the operator said to call again if I don't hear anything by end of today, so I'll update if there's any further news (hopefully, good).

UPDATE:

Feb 19 - Mailed in my application (standard processing)
Feb 22 - Passport was received
Feb 26 - Received email confirmation that passport status is processing
Mar 13 - Called to change to expedited and 1-2 day shipping
Mar 19 - Credit card charge for expedited finally appears
Mar 20 - Status updated to final processing; email received about next day shipping
Mar 21 - Passport arrived

So grateful that my passport arrived before my trip but this taught me a lesson to always pay the extra fee for expedited if you have a trip coming up, even if it's not in the next few weeks. Also don't know if it's worth to change to expedited if your passport has been processing already for a few weeks, but I didn't want to take any chances.

I renewed my own a few months back and updated the page then....now I'm going to provide info for my husband's renewal. We travel on Sunday, April 28th and did routine based on the info from this site---I recognize this is a gamble! This site has been so valuable and I want to help others with up to date info:

Mailed from Buffalo, NY USPS Priority - Saturday, March 16th, arrived at Passport location Tuesday March 19th
Check cleared Thursday March 21st ....
Logged into passport dot gov and locator number was assigned this morning. (Thursday march 21st, the same day the check cleared)

Stay tuned~

steve100 Mar 22, 2019 6:38 am

I just applied using EXPEDITED and here is my timeline:... It will be only a total of 12 days door to door (and I didn't pay for the overnight return shipping, only regular with expedited processing). I am getting a standard page-length Passport book (no passport card) and it was mailed from Boston, MA area to Philly. I enclosed a check for $170 (which was $110 for passport renewal and $60 for expedited).

1) Monday March 11th - Sent in renewal application via USPS First Class package with tracking. It only costs $2.68 for shipping by using PayPal USPS shipping for 4 ounces (they are the only ones that I know of that offer First Class package with tracking at this price). Here is the link: https://www.paypal.com/us/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_ship-now

2) Thursday March 14th 9:53am - received by Passport in Philadelphia PA

3) Friday March 15th 10:52pm - received email notification with Passport locator number

4) Monday March 18th - My bank clears the check. It looks like they converted the check into a direct debit.. It stated: "DIRECT DEBIT PASSPORTSERVIC0000002202PAYMENT (Cash)"

5) Wed March 20th - 6:49pm - received email notification saying "We have finished processing your passport, and it has been printed."

6) Friday March 22nd - I subscribe to USPS's "Informed Delivery Daily Digest" email that they send me daily email with scans of my incoming mail. At the bottom of it, it had a tracking number from a package arriving from Passport. Clicking on that tracking number, I see that I have a "Priority" package from "Passport Services Hotsprings AR" that shows the package left Hot Springs National Park on Thursday 3/21 @ 6:17pm. Interesting, this info and tracking number is NOT on the Passport status page, I'm only getting it because of the USPS notification.

7) Saturday March 23rd @ 10:35am. - Passport DELIVERED. What is interesting is that the return label says: "US Government, Portsmouth NH", but I know that this was actually sent from Hot Springs Arkansas (due the fact that the tracking history shows that). They must put the return address as the nearest office.

8) Monday March 25th. Received a 2nd package. This one had my old passport that they were returning.

March 27th - Called the Passport Office with my locator number to change it to expedited
April 1st - Received notice that my card was charged the 60.00 expediting fee
April 3rd - Received an e-mail with my passport tracking number expected arrival date 04/08/2019!! :)
April 5th - Received my passport!
Total time from routine changed to expedited to received - 13 days!!

alanrgrant Apr 8, 2019 11:32 am

My fiance and I applied for both a passport and passport card. No expedited service. Total time to receive all related items was four weeks.

Feb 2 - Applied in person at local USPS passport site.
Feb 27 - Email sent that processing was complete and passports had been shipped.
March 1 - Received both passports and passport cards.

TravelingNomads Apr 9, 2019 11:55 am

March 21 - Applied via local passport site (not a USPS location and required driving about 45 minutes away to one that didn't require appts) - Told them that we needed them for travel on April 15th. I believe this facility charged for priority mailing.
March 29 - Received notice when checking the status online that it would arrive by April 6th
April 1st - Received 3 new passports, did NOT pay for expedited
April 6th & 8th - Received birth certificates and expired passports back

Another adult had a different experience:

March 27th - Mailed in a passport renewal and listed May 4th as the deadline for when it was needed. Not mailed via priority.
April 5th - Still showed as processing without an expected date to receive it
April 5th - Paid to have it expedited
April 6th - Received email saying that it was being processed without expedited service
April 8th - Verified with the passport office that it is listed as expedited in their system even though we can't view that terminology on our end
April 9th - Finally shows in the system as expedited, but still doesn't have a date for arrival

Edit: April 11th - Estimated delivery of April 13th via Express mail!

I've been checking the passport status daily...last time was 11pm last night----it was still just showing 'processing'....this morning though at 8am eastern:

Your passport application is in the final processing stages.

When you applied, you requested Routine Service.

This means you should receive your passport on or about 04/17/2019.

Looks like the site updates overnight...I was getting really worried as we fly out on April 25th....looks like we are going to be ok...I'll keep updating! This site is awesome---thank you to all who take the time to post!

This matches almost to the day our renewal process. I did a Passport card as well, almost exactly 4 business weeks.

exerda Apr 30, 2019 6:31 pm

Hoping my wife's comes soon. She opted for regular renewal on roughly that same timeframe, with her next scheduled international trip on May 17.

Still says "processing" on the State Department website, and says to call if within 2 weeks of travel, so we're getting close to that point. It was delivered to PA around 3/18 IIRC.

We opted for the regular service to avoid the extra fees. My expedited renewal in December was in under 10 days (I had late January travel and wanted to play it safe).

Lboogs80 May 1, 2019 12:59 pm

Is there a difference between renewal applications and new ones? I would assume renewals would be easier, but it seems like most take a long time as well. I had to submit a new request because my pp expired. I still had to send off my old one, which I thought was weird. Anyway, tomorrow would make 3 weeks exactly (15 days) after the State Dept received my application and gave me an application locator number. I travel next week Friday, it's on a closed loop cruise to the Bahamas so I don't necessarily need the passport, but it would be nice to have it by then.

8am: Arrived at Washington DC Passport Agency
8:30am: Renewal application Submitted
2:30pm: Arrived to pick-up (slip said 2pm)
3:30pm: New passport and old cancelled passport in hand

Overall, I was quite impressed and it was perhaps the most positive experience I've ever had interacting with a US government agency.

BhO May 2, 2019 3:24 pm

April 17 - Applied at local USPS office (renewal, normal processing, for minor)
May 2 - email notification, saying printed with USPS tracking (label created)
May 4 - ETA

Wow. I'm assuming this was one of the "immediate need" expedited versions?

I've gotten same day service before even when I didn't need it for another 8 days.

Lboogs80 May 3, 2019 8:21 am

So I bit the bullet yesterday and paid $152.96 for myself and my girlfriend's passports to be expedited. It's frustrating not having any updated information at all during this process. It drove me crazy and being on week 3 and still no news was getting to me. They took the money out of my account this morning, no update yet on their website.

My timeline
April 6: Submitted application for new passport book at local library. Expired passport submitted as well.
April 11: Notified via email that the application was received and given my locator number.
April 12: Check was cashed by dept.
May 2: Called status line and expedited our applications (3 weeks, 15 business days exactly from the date application received)
May 3: Expedite fee taken out of account, no update on the website yet.

This was needed for a visa application for travel in two weeks (the specific visa required a year of remaining validity, and I didn't have it). No questions or documentation needed beyond a self-written note, which I scribbled down in front of them, stating need.

nxlinc May 7, 2019 1:11 pm

Regular Renewal with 52 page book requested.

April 01: Mailed USPS Priority to PA
April 08: Email confirmation with locator number
No info on check cashing because I used a MO
May 07: Email with tracking number saying expected delivery 05/13

Side note: I have been checking the status every morning for the last week or two and this morning it still hadn't updated, but since the email shows it completed.

Still waiting. Called today to pay the expedite fee since it is "processing" and nothing more, despite having been submitted more than 6 weeks ago. Phone agent took the fee and said there were "no guarantees it would be done by the 17th" despite the expedite fee.

I am just hoping it doesn't come down to an in-person visit on the 15th, when my wife gets back into town from her current trip. Seriously, mine (expedited) came in a bit over a week back in December; hers is amazing in that it's been more than 6 weeks now (we submitted the application a bit more than the 8 week mark, IIRC, from travel).

New Passports

How long is it currently taking to get a US passport?

Often1 May 11, 2019 1:03 pm

If you only mailed the applications on April 25, and did not pay any expedite fees, there really is not a delay. But, to prod this along, I would call the national hotline. While it is open 24/7, you will do better during regular business hours.

If it comes to it, the passports can be issued from a Passport Agency in a few hours.

Let us know how the call goes.

AlexMas May 13, 2019 7:22 pm

.

Can you get a renew-ed passport at passport agency when your original routine application is still 'processing' ?
And your old passport has been mailed to State department ?

We applied for minor's passport/passport book renewal on April 4th. We can not check status online (no idea why). But we can check it over the phone and they always tell you 'processing '. It has been pretty much 6 weeks

phte5115 May 16, 2019 12:17 pm

Applied for US Passport Card, routine service. I had to submit my (still valid) passport with the application.
4/17/19 - mailed application via priority mail
4/20/19 - application arrived at facility
4/22/19 - check cashed
4/23/19 - application showed up in online system
5/22/19 - email received saying that passport card has been printed, will be mailed priority mail, and should be expected on or about 5/28
5/23/19 - Two more emails saying that the passport would be received on or around 6/1

I applied for the passport card so that I could visit Canada while I submit my actual passport for a visa application (applying for a long-term work visa for Switzerland). Was planning on starting the road trip on June 3rd, more than 6 weeks after the passport card application was received at the facility, which I assumed would be fine, but was starting to get nervous at 4.5 weeks, since they don't mail passport cards or your old passport back via priority mail, and wondering if I should call and expedite. Will probably wait another week I guess.

Update: I called the passport Info center, they acknowledged that it was still processing but it had only been 5 weeks and that if I wanted to I could pay $60 to expedite. I mentioned that I'm only 2 weeks away from when I need the card, and I wasn't sure if expediting would help. I also mentioned that I need the card by June 3rd, which is more than 6 weeks after the application was submitted (would be almost 7 weeks). She said that it is processing at a facility in Portsmouth, NH and that if I haven't heard anything by next week, to call again and they can arrange for me to make an appointment and potentially pick up my card at the facility (instead of waiting for it to come in the mail).

2nd update: Looks like the passport card is now printed, and should receive it by 5/28. This would mean total time door to door will be exactly 6 weeks. Will update when it is received.

edit: recieved 2 more emails, now the expected arrival is on or around 6/1. Just hope they don't push it out any farther. So what I have learned from this thread is that the processing time is highly variable, probably depends on the exact facility/state you are in, and routine processing can take up to 6 weeks not including mailing time.

mlk84 May 16, 2019 12:53 pm

From my understanding, yes you can get a passport if your other passport is pending. However, you will have to again pay all the fees plus expedited fees.

May 17 Received email today that passport had been printed and can expect by May 25

I was expecting it to take much longer.

3 weeks is about average right now for non-expedited. It's even faster if applying from outside the US.

That is quick. :) Nice :)
I submitted mine on April 25 and unfortunately it is still processing. I am getting worried because I am traveling on June 3rd. In the past the turnaround time was much quicker. I am now debating on expediting. Any advice? I would really like to avoid those extra charges :(

My check was cashed on April 24th and mine was still processing today. I have travel coming up on June 9th so I went ahead and expedited today. They said I will receive my passport in 8 business days from the time they accept my expedite request. I would definitely call and expedite if I were you.

Thank you! I greatly appreciate your post and info you provided. It did make me a bit nervous since you have been waiting a bit more than I have. I went ahead and expedited. I'm not willing to take anymore chances. Thanks so much for your help.
