What office was yours sent to?
I can’t believe that a renewal of a non-expired passport is taking double the time as two first time passports, one being a toddler. I should have just booked my ticket in my maiden name and used my current passport and saved myself this headache. |
We just got the approval today, on Saturday. Almost 9 weeks from the time it was received by department of state and just 6 days before the departure. We will get the passport Monday or Tuesday, so that's really close.

Thanks did not realize they were so understaffed

I received the 'processing' email today. They received my renewal docs on 8/7. In reading several posts it seems there's movement in a couple of weeks or less from receiving the initial email. I wonder if that is just coincidence or if the email actually means it's being worked.

Update: Received this email today. Regular processing, renewal of an expired passport.
Status: Approved The U.S. Department of State approved your application for your passport book. We're now printing your passport book and preparing to give it to you. You requested routine service when you applied, which we are currently processing in 6-8 weeks. You should receive your passport book on or around 08/31/2019. |

Regular Service App Sent already!
Aug 12th: Appointment at USPS in L.A. California
Aug 16th: Application received and processing Aug 26th: Application processing Aug 28th: Passport shipped. Sept 2nd: Passport expected delivery date. |
Regular service for non-expired renewal of passport book: 7/31: App sent via USPS 8/8: Received for processing (really slow transit even though I paid for 2-day shipping. I actually filed a claim and recouped costs and the tracking to this day still says the package is in transit) 8/9: Check was cashed 8/10: Processing application status on website 9/3: Received email about processing status 9/4: Received email about approval status and imminent printing with expected delivery date of 9/9 Just a little less than 4 weeks from receipt to approval and probably 4.5 weeks door to door (not including the unusually slow transit time to the processing center) |
Routine renewal of passport book and application for a new card
Old passport book was expiring in mid-November 2019. 8/6 Application mailed from Arizona to Philadelphia PO Box by first class mail. 8/12 Application received. 8/13 Check cashed. 9/5 Two e-mails received 6 hours apart: “Application approved” and “Passport book and card shipped” to be delivered by Priority mail around 9/11. Only one USPS tracking number was provided, so far the tracking states Label created, not yet in system. This means about 5 weeks door to door, or mailbox to mailbox. |

I submitted a renewal from DC that arrived the same day as you (8/20). Still in processing. It was expired, so that could be adding time?

My passport was 15 years expired ... but I had all my documents exactly as needed. I even corrected the clerk who was taking my application; he would not take my expired passport, because it was expired and said I had filled out the wrong form. After I had him talk with his supervisor, he processed my app and even thanked me because "he learned something new".
EDIT: I spoke too soon. Just got the email. Approved and estimated arrival on 9/22 (original date for receipt and processing was 8/20). So well ahead of the promised 6-8 weeks for routine service. |
Does it take longer to renew a passport than applying for a new one? (Regular processing)

Routine renewal service for non-expired passport
9/16 Sent via USPS Priority Mail
9/23 Received for processing 9/24 Approved and Shipped 9/27 Delivered That was unexpectedly fast. |
Received an email today stating my passport renewal had been approved and would be printing. Two hours later I received another email, stating that they had received it on September 13th and that they were now reviewing my application?! My husband also received the approval email and has already received a shipping notice. Does this mean there was a problem with the photo, or am I panicking too soon?

First time and renewal at Frankfurt consulate
Not sure if this belongs here, but I applied for my son's CRBA and passport at the Frankfurt consulate in September and 8 days later received both (from the consulate), which means they received them from the US at least a couple of days prior. I'd also renewed my passport card in person and received that too. Super fast.

The most common major delays experienced for CRBA+first US passport tend to be if the parental applicants decide to not do a pick-up in person and the domestic/regional mail courier service messes up/slows things down or if the parental applicants are waiting to be contacted to know when to come to pick-up the CRBA+passport in person. If someone who does a CRBA+first passport for a child in the EU and doesn't get it back within 14 business days, I would take it as a sign that something went wrong somewhere. |
First time passport - Regular Service
9/09: Application submitted at local circuit court in Virginia.
9/13: Passport application received. 9/16: E-mail update: Application Status: In Process. 9/17: Check was cashed. 9/30: E-mail Update: Application Status: Approved. 9/30: Passport Shipped, expected delivery 10/07. 10/03: Passport Delivered. 10/06: Personal Documents Delivered. |
I renewed my passport by mail and requested routine processing:
* Sent the application (DS-82) via USPS on Aug 22 * The passport center received it on Aug 26 * New passport shipped on Sep 18 * Arrived on Sep 21 The new passport had a picture defect, so I submitted DS-5504 (also routine processing): * Sent the application (DS-5504) via USPS on Sep 24 * The passport center received it on Sep 30 * New passport shipped on Oct 4 * Arrived on Oct 7 It seems that they process DS-5504 much faster than DS-82 (5 days vs 22 days). Still, even regular service DS-82 is significantly faster than 6-8 weeks that they mention on their website. |

My mother in law applied for a first passport on 9/26 and received it this past Tuesday (10/15). We thought there might be an issue since she was born in Germany (at a U.S. Army hospital to U.S. parents) but we were able to find the documents she needed. I was impressed it was that quick.

Super helpful thread. Adding my data for an expedited application, first-time adult passport after naturalization. A highly impressive 10 days from mailing the application to getting the approval, which includes 4 weekend days in the middle!
