While packing for my international flight tomorrow, I cannot find my passport. I consider it lost. Anyone have experience on the fastest way to get it replaced?

Told all passport agencies are closed for the rest of this week. Argh

POTUS made both Wed 12/24 and Fri 12/26 federal holidays.

Any recent data points?

I applied in person (not at a passport center) on December 12th with expedited service, today is December 27th and the tracking website says no application found.

The $35 facility check was cashed but not the application check itself.

Have planned travel in mid-Jan so getting close to the 14-day mark where I could pivot to passport center (I live near one).

How recent? Applied in early September (regular service) and did online application. Had a passport in hand in less than 10 days.

Update: got an email on Dec 30 saying the passport application had been received on Dec 29 and is now being processed.

So delay was likely on the part of application location or the postal service, not the Dept of State passport center that's processing the application.

Final rundown on that, if it's helpful for anyone:

Dec 12: applied in person, expedited
Dec 30: received email saying received on Dec 29
Jan 03: received email saying approved
Jan 07: estimated arrival

27 days start to finish, with two federal holidays and what looks like a significant postal delay.

Thanks for the update and data points. I wonder if you ran into a bit of bad luck with the end of the year rush and/or federal holidays (that were increased this year).

I can't remember if I posted this. I don't like the thought of being without my passport, so prefer to do it at a passport office. I made an appointment at the New Orleans passport office, which I had no trouble getting. Even though I showed up early, I was in and out in less than 20 minutes. And then they phoned me one hour later to tell me that my passport was ready.When I showed up to pick it up I realized that it was their lunch hour, but still they let me in and gave me my new passport.

The email notifications were 2 days late. (I checked status on the website everyday.) I never received the tracking number. I found that out through USPS Informed Delivery.

Family member renewed online (no special handling) three weeks ago. Passport received by ordinary mail 17 days later.

Getting their AI system to approve the picture we took involved something like ten submissions, though.

Renewed via USPS
- 2/17/26 - Mailed application
- 2/20/26 - Received (In process)
- 2/26/26 - Shipped
- 2/27/26 - Approved
- 3/2/26 - Received Passport book via USPS

Checked passport status on website daily. They posted the tracking number on 2/26/26 when it stated "Shipped". It did further state that "Save or write down this tracking number now. Future status updates will not display your tracking number". The next day, the updated website was "Approved" and the tracking number was no longer listed.
The email notifications sent were when the application was received and when it was approved. No email notification for shipped.
Still quite impressed at how quick this was. I did not pay for expedited processing ($60).
