Actually the book is better. You can't fly internationally with the card. The card just basically covers land and sea travel.

Your book should work for medical tourism too. The book works the same way as the card, but even better.

I understand that the card is easier to carry than the book, but is there something else the card can do that the book can't?

Yes, the card is an RFID enabled document which allows you to use Ready Lanes when crossing the border. The passport book is not eligible for use of the Ready Lane.

Ah, of course. I had seen that before, and it surprised me because the passports also have RFID chips in them. Thanks for the reminder!

Passport cards use vicinity-read RFID which can be read up to 30 feet. Passport books use RF-enabled smart card technology which has a short read range of two inches.

And the card did come today, via snail mail from DC. The book came express from Tucson. So 14 calendar days from online app to in my hands.

Only SNAFU is Global Entry site is not accepting the new passport number as yet. SENTRI card is a must between Tijuana and SAN. Can probably update docs at CBP next time I walk back.

Got mine in 3 weeks, using regular processing. Old style 52 pager.

P.S. Does anyone have pictures of the visa pages for the new style passport? I've always loved looking at the artwork and quotes, curious what the new ones have.

Waiting almost 3 months for renewal in Canada!

In a bit of a panic right now. I live in Canada (NS) and need to travel for work in 3 weeks.

July 5, 2022 - mailed passport application
August 3, 2022 - application status mailed (no tracking number)

October 5, 2022 - called NPIC and they could not provide any information

Called a few days later and was told (over the phone) passport was returned to the Agency, apparently was not accepted by Canada Post. The guy on the phone agreed to submit a request to the Agency to resend but I did not receive any tracking or applicator number.

Today Oct 24 - still no passport and no status update. Called NPIC a few times and was told I could submit a request to reissue the passport (by submitting DS-86) but if the passport was resent and shows up before a reissued one, it would be invalid.

Does anyone have any advice? I have little confidence a request was actually submitted to reissue. I cannot get through to the US consulate in Halifax and there are no appointments available.

I understand you are living in Canada but you might try contacting the congressional office of the representative where you used to live (or where a family member currently lives) and ask if they can assist.

Looking to get Next Gen Large Book....can anyone confirm it's possible at Atlanta agency?

It was earlier this month. But possible is far from being guaranteed to get it.

Given how lousy the physical photo prints are in the Next Gen version, I strongly prefer the prior passport book version with the more traditional biodata page. Picking isn’t generally an option, unfortunately.

US citizens resident abroad are domiciled for voting purposes in the last place where they resided in the US or where their US parent(s) lived/voted. So that FTer would still have a US House Rep and two US Senators whose constituents services staff should at least make the motions of being responsive.

[For applicants who apply abroad, make sure to pick up passports and passport cards well before 90 days or less of issuance.]
