A colleague's passport was damaged while working in Hawaii earlier this week. Called the appointment center when they opened and got a same day appointment in Honolulu. New passport next day, with return flight to Europe the day after that. Impressed by the availability of appointments and the speed of the replacement :tu:

Hawaii has always been great, they were in fact the last place where one could normally go without an appointment and get a passport the same day.

Some datapoints for ppl following
I submitted passport along with my friend on the exact same day. Both received at location 34. --- Friday 9/2 - USPS Priority mail (with EXPEDITE written on the envelope) Monday 9/5 - Labor Day Holiday Tuesday 9/6 - received in PA Thursday 9/8 - check cashed Thursday 9/8 - Status: In Process --- This is where we differ. Monday 9/19 - Status: Approved Tuesday 9/20 - updated ETA was given: 9/23/22 Wednesday 9/21 - Passport Received in hand UPDATE: 09/27: Just received letter in mail saying need to submit application. This is odd because I printed it an auto generated form exactly as they requested. Its unclear if I need to get a new photo |
As a follow up I received a new plastic version with a large book. I didn't know these were available.

Unfortunately, processing times for passport applications submitted in-person at US consulates/embassies abroad have become slower than they were in the first and second quarters of this year.
Where submitted applications last fall would take 6-10 days until the standard passports were back at missions, it’s now no longer as fast on average. |
Applied via the online renewal pilot. Oddly, application still shows as In Process online.
9/23: Application submitted with expedited processing 9/26: Application in process 10/11: Shipped via Priority Mail from Tucson 10/13: Extra pages next-gen passport arrived |

Yes, the online update system still showed "in process" on the day I received my passport:confused:

One mission where it used to be 6-10 calendar days early this year is now at c. 14-15 calendar days for turnarounds.
The online renewal system you used had very recently gone glitchy and down for a bit, but that’s not why you got the in process thing showing like it did. The status updating system is just not extremely dependable (and never has been as far back as it’s been around), and so I continue to tend to sort of ignore what it shows on the website except for if it’s a “positive” update in application status. |
I applied online 10/7, not expedited but paid for fast delivery. I received the book today but not my card. Website still says processing. I need my card for medical tourism!
