GA: "boarding is based on the lowest zone number in your party"

I recently completed a trip from FLL to PHL. Just before boarding began, the GA got on the PA and announced that "if you're traveling with someone else, you board based on the lowest zone number between you" or something to that effect. This is never how I've seen it done before in years of flying US. Admittedly, I mostly travel on UA, and I'm more used to their procedure. As *Alliance Gold, I've always boarded, with my no-status partner, with Zone 1.

Is this new, or just an anomaly caused by a power-happy GA?

Neither. It's a boarding process used by maybe half of the GAs I've run across.

Doesn't lowest mean you would go with the earlier zone? Low number, right? This is how it is handled most of the time in my experience.

Am I'm missing something?

That's correct......if you're a 3 traveling with a 1, you board with the 1.

That's what I thought. I may have misinterpreted the GA's meaning - thinking 'lowest' meant in priority, rather than number. I'll just charge ahead next time, if I hear this announcement again, and see what happens. In this case, I just didn't want to cause a scene and potentially hold up the line.

The GA meant low as in low numerically. I hear this all the time.

If you are zone 1 and your companion is zone 3 ... since 1 < 3 (hence "low") ... you can both board in zone 1.

No. 1 is lower than any other Zone they use.
