To trust, or not to trust
OK, I usually originate from PHL, so my bags are only lost upon return, not a huge deal. But now I have a dilemma. I'm going PHL-LAS-SAN, with a planned arrival at 2:25 pm in LAS, departing at 11:59 pm for LAS. Any thoughts on my chances of having a checked bag make that 11:59 pm flight after sitting for 8 1/2 hours in LAS baggage? I know the locker options in LAS, etc. but would just rather check it and forget it, (but not forever)!

Be sure to look at the bag claim office in SAN before waiting for your flight's carousel. Despite all the lip service regarding security bag matching, I've found that during any extended layover, my bag almost always beats me to my destination (unless my flight is the only service that day). This has held true irrespective of carrier. [Corollary of this rule is that on my return if I try standby for an earlier flight I always lie at the gate when asked if I've checked bags. I'm sure my PNR indicates otherwise, but I've never gotten snagged.]
Of course, I'm a bit of a unicorn: despite frequently checking bags, I've never lost one (knock wood). This does not keep me from packing a few necessities in my carry on though. Ounce of prevention and what not.

I imagine you aren't checking your bags through. I know that they technically aren't supposed to take your bag more than 3 hours before flight (I believe it was 3 hours). I was told this once when flying the redeye back from LAS to DCA and got there about 5 hours early not wanting to hang out in a Casino any longer. The TA said..."well your CP so we'll get it checked." My baggage came out on the other end just fine.

This is not only no problem, it's actually a good thing. The longer your connection, the more likely your bag will make it.

Gotcha now, I don't see why this would be a problem. Hell my bag sits at SJU for 2 days 99% of the time when I connect from US to AA going to STX. Eventually it always makes it
