Fractured my foot- should I ask for an upgrade?
Hi everyone! Long time reader, first time poster! I recently fractured two bones in my foot and have had it placed in a orthopedic shoe bandaged up tightly to prevent my foot moving. I can't walk, put weight on it and I need to keep it elevated most of the time.
I am flying to London to see family next week, the doctor has advised me I could fly but would need to keep my leg and foot elevated throughout the flight. I don't have enough money nor do I have as many miles needed to upgrade myself to Business. I have called US Airways to arrange a wheelchair and electric cart 'escort' through the airport but I am concerned about my foot that I would not be able to elevate it for 7 hours or if I am able to fit down the aisle and it to my seat with crutches.
Advice please? Do you think I am being greedy or think I should ask?

The chances of getting a free upgrade are pretty close to zero. You can ask, but be prepared to be told no. You may be better off trying to book into the center bank of seats and hoping the ones next to you remain open so you can stretch out across the seats.

Are you traveling with anyone? When MrsCP broke her ankle skiing, we flew home with her in the window and her foot draped across the kids' laps in the aisle/middle seats.

You could ask for an exit row seat, then you have enough space to strech your leg *LOL*...

Only the OP doesn't qualify for an exit row seat, based on what is written. I don't think someone needing a wheelchair to get to their seat would not be able to perform the exit row duties.

You can always ask. You might have a better chance securing the bulkhead or an empty neighbor seat in the back. Be careful phrasing it... If you indicate your doctor advises against flying if you can not elevate your foot -- and it appears he did -- you could be denied boarding.

If the doctor has advised that the foot be kept elevated , then if you cannot affors to go business class, you have a bit of an issue I think
Do you have a certificate from doctor indicating that you are fit to travel? turning up with an obvious injury , the airline may well have concerns and want to see it
Asking for an upgrade will likely be replied to with a response of "certainly sir, how would you like to pay the fare difference"

But passengers often think that they get an emergency seat with such a story at the check-in counter...

Not to sound harsh, but no way you will get a free upgrade to Business Class on the flight to LHR. Not when we all pay $900 for it.

Perhaps you should postpone your trip.

Yes. Also ask if they can pick you up from your house and perform regular in-flight massage to keep the blood supply going. Rest assured, their answer will be the same.

Do you know how heavily booked the flight is? I agree with others that they won't upgrade you for this but if its a light load maybe you can get an empty seat next to you. Front bulkhead in Y won't really give you much room but the bulkhead in the center section by the exits might be an option.

From the OP - a first time poster with no further entries ... could this be a spoof?
