Am I missing something (CLT-EWR)?

Was looking into a direct flight from Charlotte to Newark on 07/30. Here's the one-way fare for all nine direct flights:

Coach (non-refundable) - $696
Coach (flexible) - $696
First (non-refundable) - $503
First (flexible) - $703

Checked some other dates at random and the same price structure is in place. Further, most of the flights appear to have a ton of empty seats. What gives?

Edit: Ha! Just found I can go GSP-CLT-EWR for $153 the same day.

LGA....

CLT-LGA are usually pretty cheap, and a pretty easy upgrade.

For some reason EWR tends to have pretty steep fares, and CLT-EWR does in particular. And for some reason, US Airways' first class fares often aren't any higher than coach tickets.

CLT-JFK has jetBlue competition, CLT-LGA has Delta & American (& Southwest with a connection). CLT-EWR has United competition, but for whatever reason the airfare stays high. Never been able to figure it out.

This was exactly the same last summer when I looked for a one-way CLT-EWR - coach higher than F and just really high anyway. The UA flights were priced similarly. Wonder if this might change after the merger?

If you price out a roundtrip with a return date a few days after 7/30, it comes to $431, and with some random return date in November, $329. In fact, when I called to ask if what I was seeing was really accurate, the agent told me to buy roundtrip and just drop the return! I ended up doing Delta to LGA for under $100 - US was a good bit higher on that route too.
