Auto upgrade when crediting to other airline?

So, with the h/s/j promo, there's really no reason for me to continue to accrue US EQM this calendar year, even though I have several flights on US. I'm assuming that in order to be eligible for an automatic upgrade, I need to have my US number in the system. Is that right? Is there any way to credit my US flights to another carrier while still preserving the chance of an auto upgrade? I assume this has been asked and answered previously, but I think maybe the search terms I'm trying aren't very good.

That's right.

You can try asking the agent to change FF numbers at the gate. Some have had luck with this but YMMV. You may find yourself crediting miles to the other FF program as you sit in the middle seat last row.

Personally I've never tried this but from the reports in this forum, your request to switch the FF number may end up with you having the going mileage upgrade amount deducted from your DM account or may revert, going back to credit your US account and not that other mileage account.

Thanks all. Sounds like it's not worth it.
