maaan I wish they hired someone smart to write that promotion better. This is what happens when an engineer writes that and not an english major guy.

Agree with rodrigo about your engineer comment: in general, people from engineering backgrounds are more logical and specific in their writing; engineers are more likely to account for all rational possibilities rather than leave a point of understanding to be inferred by the reader as a poet or playwright might do. Grammarians, on the other hand...

It does seem rather unlikely that there can be a "bonus" on dollars spent, since there is no existing dollars-to-miles conversion established other than the ones already listed (i.e. 40 miles per $1 spent at TIB).

A gray area is whether the bonus applies on top of the "bonuses" (i.e. whether you get 10500 or 3000 for ShareBuilder).

Also, considering that the instructions talk about shopping at 5 "participating merchants," and is then followed by a list of all the "participating merchants," I would think that any 5 should do with the exception of the insurance quotes, since we technically didn't "shop" at those merchants.

I think we can all agree that this is a poorly worded promotion. Depending on how US Airways chooses to interpret its own words:

1. They could only give the 250% bonus on the 5th - 10th partners and not Partner Nos. 1 - 4 if 5 or more partners are used.

2. They could only give bonuses for Partner Nos. 6- 10 if they are different than Partners 1 - 5 and each other rather than giving bonuses for using 5 different partners plus some duplicates.

3. They could treat US Airways Shopping Mall as 1 unique partner or each store in the mall as different partners.

4. They could require all activity to post by December 30 to earn a bonus rather than allow partner activity that occurred during the promo but did not post until after December 30 to count.

5. They could adopt the bonus-for-every-dollar-spent interpretation championed by pointsjunkie53 and doubled79.

For all of those reasons, anyone who is actually thinking of spending large amounts of dollars for throw-away items as a form of quasi-purchase of US Airways miles at a discount is taking a risk. The question then becomes how big of a risk is it, and I don't think anyone really knows.

A few days ago I filled out a customer support question on the website asking about question #1. Today, I got the response below (names removed). Since I have the email, this clears up #1 for five partners.

Does anyone have a direct customer service email address? Someone with CP status? A well worded email and response would end this dispute.

Hi. I have a question about the shopping bonus promotion. Say I shop at
five different stores. At the end, does the 250% bonus apply to all five
stores? Or does the first one get 50%, second 100%, and so on?

Speaking of engineers and leaving meaning up to interpretation...

If you define "shop" as buying something you're right. However, one can "shop" without making a purchase (I'm married to someone that does that regularly).

According to Miriam-Webster, the verb "shop" means

1 a : to examine goods or services with intent to buy b : to hunt through a market in search of the best buy
2 : to make a search : hunt <shopping around for a better idea

Now we can have an in-depth discussion on whether one needs to actually buy something to get the bonus since I think the "bonus on dollars or miles" has been beat to death...

is anyone having trouble with restarauant.com purchase through ThanksAgain? I have made 2 separate purchases over the span of 10 days, and neither one has shown up. The first purchase was on 11/27/09, and the second one was 2 days ago.

jaronliu Dec 9, 2009 3:21 am

Yes, nothing for me too! Strange... dont know to pull the trigger on TIB now or not...

Actually, 1 thing I have always wanted to ask but forgot... is this open only to legal residents of US? Or anyone with US DM can participate?

So far have:
lego.com - LEGO brick erasers £1.95
Barnes and Noble - Silent witness eBook $1.99 (disallowed.. won't allow non US billing address)
Sears - $5 eGift card
Omaha steaks - $5 eGift card

At least I'm getting an error if I try to order egift cards at sears internationally . I think you can order at B&N a 10$ eGift.

Edit: And regarding wrong addresses/paypal: Paypal checkout itself can be limited to US addresses (and is used as far as I tested it) and US only merchants might also check if your CC was issued in the US?.

Yes, mine are not posting either. In the past, these posted quickly. I do see the points listed in my ThanksAgain account, but for whatever reason, these have not moved over to my DM account.

Interesting. This was just added to their FAQs in the last few days. If you pull up the cached page on Google, you won't see this FAQ.

So, now I would expect a potential problem with the return, but I'm generally not worried about receiving the miles. After all, US Air will still profit from my transaction on the front end. On the back, well, not so much.:D

Gift Cards

I have searched high and low and can't find anywhere that this is addressed. I purchased a B&N gift card through this promotion and then as soon as I get it, I log back in through the link and go to B&N and make a purchase for the full amount of the gift card. Any thoughts on whether this will effectively double all my miles (assuming I have done 5 different merchants and less than 10 overall purchases).

When does the restaurant.com purchase post in the ThanksAgain account? I can't even see it there. My purchase was on Sat 12/5.

I consider that an acceptable risk, though.

Update: My initial trades on three accounts were consumated yesterday. A total of 9,000 miles posted today! Way, way faster than I expected. YMMV.

Just to make sure, I made 7 small purchases last week, so just waiting for them to post before pulling the big TIB trigger....only question is how many to aim for ;-)

As someone who travels US-Europe at least monthly, 125,000 for a *A F award at around 0.7c/mile has me salivating

Although I suspect it will work, I would not count on that written response from US as being an official view nor a guarantee that multiple purchases from the DM shopping mall will count as multiple unique partners for the purposes of this promotion (excepting those noted separately in the promotion webpage, such as Barnes & Noble).

ArizonaGuy Dec 9, 2009 11:37 am

For Thanks Again:

First, if your restaurant.com purchase isn't listed in the ThanksAgain website, you should contact them. Not a single purchase I've ever made there makes it into their system whether I use their own specific online mall or their "offline store locator" which they pointed me to when I first contacted them. They've always manually input the purchase for me.

Second, if the purchase is there, showing 3 miles per $1, be patient. It's usually transferred to US swiftly but it can also take up to 2 weeks in my personal experience.

derby44 Dec 9, 2009 12:44 pm

I made eight purchases---seven have posted---Sears ($5.00) gift card---which I have received--- is the only one not to post. Now let's hope the 250% bonus posts. My biggest are Trackitback and Sharebilder. Best of luck to all.

libuser Dec 9, 2009 12:51 pm

for real ?
i just sent them an email and thinking of doing the same to all the other merchants cause that really scares me...

I may have assumed wrong all along, but I thought that the DM Shopping Mall was just what US called their collection of partner merchants and not an entity itself - i.e. you can't buy anything from an entity named DM shopping mall since it doesn't exist, but rather buy things from partner merchants that are collectively called DM Shopping Mall by US.

I personally think it will not work. First, I only put slightly more faith in what an email response says than a phone response, and that would be next to no faith instead of no faith.

I would expect that each of the listed merchants on the promotion page counts as one for the five needed to reach the 250% bonus level, so any of the individually listed stores can count as one, then any store not individually listed but part of Dividend Miles Mall is a single merchant.

Note that this is consistent with the way the recently completed Grand Slam promotion worked, Bose counted as a separate merchant even though they are part of the Mileage Mall, then all other Mileage Mall merchants counted as a single transaction together. The difference in this promotion is that many more of the merchants have been broken out separately for whatever reason, but I would still expect all those not listed separately to count under the Dividend Mile Mileage Mall singly.

BoeingBoy Dec 9, 2009 1:46 pm

According to the terms and conditions, you are correct Beckles:

"The US Airways Big Bonus Offer ('Offer') is available for transactions with participating Dividend Miles partners/stores listed on usairways.com/bigbonus only."

The usairways.com/bigbonus url takes one to the page describing the promotion and listing the participating merchants.

Gift for College Sports Fans

I happened to see this the other day within magazines.com -- a partner that pays 15 miles per $ before bonuses.

http://www.magazines.com/search/list...hrules=default (By the way, don't use this link for ordering. You'll want to sign in through your US Airways account.)

It's effectively a book (one-issue subscription) about the history of a number of different college sports teams. I was told yesterday that my order would arrive before Christmas, but you probably should check yourself before taking the plunge.

$32.97 x 15 x 350% = 1,731 miles

This partner falls under the umbrella of the Shopping Mall.

WOW. Even more impressive is that the miles went in my account in less than 1.5 hours. I didn't think that was even possible. Maybe it was a coincidence?

Clarification Regarding the Big Bonus Promotion:

Thanks to beaubo and Janet @ InsideFlyer, the following information has been provided from US Airways regarding this promotion (emphasis mine):

For every different partner that Dividend Miles members shop that are listed on the promotion landing page (usairways.com/bigbonus) during the promotion period (11/23 - 12/30), members will be eligible for a bonus. The bonus is calculated on the number of DIFFERENT partners they shop with, up to 250% bonus on what the partner lists as their mileage offer.

For example: If you were to shop just at Bose during the promotion period, your bonus would be 50% more of their 1,500 offer, so 2,250 total miles. If you were shop at Bose, FTD and Macy's, you be eligible for a 150% bonus on their offers.

To ensure that we have all mileage postings from our partners, we will run the process to post all bonus miles due to our members on March 1, 2010. What ever level of bonus that is due to members will be applied to the FIRST 10 transactions (If you shopped at iTunes 3 times, that counts as 3 transactions), based on the partner's mileage posting timestamp, of transactions that occurred during the promotion period.

Also, each Dividend Miles Shopping Mall merchant WILL count as a different transaction, and are eligible for increasing a bonus level.
Hope this helps, thanks to Janet for working to clarify this and to beaubo for passing it along.

Hi. I have a question about the shopping bonus promotion. Say I shop at
five different stores. At the end, does the 250% bonus apply to all five
stores? Or does the first one get 50%, second 100%, and so on?

Message generated on www2.usairways.com at 12/05/2009 08:56:10.

I wasn't going to do this one but then I need to get some kind of holiday gift box to my Mom in CA so I figured might as well jump in. The above email seems to be ambigous, I would interpret it as 250% for all 5 stores? But people seem to be very concerned about posting dates which doesn't support the above email.

I have done just today:
Gaiam
Thanks Again

Planning to do:
B&N Ebook
FTD (gift for Mom)

Track it Back if the other ones post. What is the last day I can order a Track It Back and still have the activity date before the end of promo?

Does "partner's mileage posting timestamp" equate to the US DM activity date or the US DM posting date? Can anyone shed some light on this?

I guess we can hang out hat on the last "clarifying" sentence even though it seems at odds with the first "clarifying" paragraph. (Apparently there is nothing special about B&N, Sears, etc. other than they get special treatment over the other Shopping Mall stores.)

ShareBuilder 3000 miles posted! I set up an "automatic investment plan," but the miles posted before any deposit had even been posted. Does this mean I can cancel my deposit? :)

No postings yet from:
21st Century Insurance
Barnes & Noble
Sears
ThanksAgain/restaurant.com

pointsjunkie53, which 5 of the stores had already posted for you?

I'm going to wait until at least 2 or 3 post before taking the TIB plunge... I still don't trust USAir enough to put thousands on the line.
