Tonight on ... "You Asked For It".

Since Tom asked... Here it is, in nice "spreadsheet" form for you stat geeks, like me.

Base Fare RT mileage $/mi
PHL to
RDU $53.96 674 $0.080
PVD $53.96 474 $0.114
BDL $53.96 392 $0.138
RDU $53.96 674 $0.080
MHT $53.96 578 $0.093

Totals $269.80 2792 $0.097

So Tom, 9.7 cents per mile on this venture will be US' revenue per mile flown w/o taxes. How does this compare?

I actually need to thank Jim for doing all the upfront work for this. I only had to spend about 1/2 hour on the phone with him on Friday to concurrently book the flights he had pre-determined. We booked five roundtrips in a row on usairways.com & didn't have any problems!

Steve, it's cool that you can join us on part of this!

And breakfast and lunch too. We are on the same pair of PHL-RDU-PHL flights in the AM! We decided we'd better hit MHT in the afternoon since it was the one $29 GoFare city we wouldn't have already hit.

9.7 cents per mile ought to put a smile on their faces -- keeping in mind that these trips are completely discretionary, utterly frivolous and at rock bottom fares it's fairly impressive that they are none the less squeezing that kind of money out of you guys. You're the bottom of the barrel and still within spitting distance of profitability. GoFares are not putting these guys in the poor house.

Keep track of loads on your flights too -- it wouldn't do to be taking a seat that could have been sold to someone else for more money. So long as there is an empty seat and no volunteers are actually needed you have added 9.7 cents/mile that they would not have otherwise gained.

If they were really smart they'd offer to let you stay home and just give you the miles That way they could save on pretzels, drinks, fuel and the PITA factor -- plus they'd have a shot at selling your seats again! But that wouldn't be nearly as much fun...

I tried that last night when my PHL-MHT flight was cancelled. I asked the rep at the CP desk if I could just get the credit as this was my 5th RT and worth 7000 preferred miles. She said no -- gotta fly. I know the rules, but figured I'd already done 4 RTs over the previous 24 hours and maybe they would just give it to me. No dice so I'm off this afternoon for the last RT PHL-MHT-PHL....Now, I'm going to have to have a few drinks and some snacks -- so the revenue is going down

Don't forget the GA in Hartford...

just as we walk off the jetway:

me, handing over my ID - "Hi, I need to get my boarding pass"
GA - "How'd you get through security?"
me - "well..."
GA - "Wait..." looks back at people still coming off the plane "where are you coming from?"
me - "Philly."
GA - "And were are you going to?"
me - "Philly."
GA - "ok, you're going to have to explain this because I'm certainly not following."
dukeman's mom - "no, actually, you're following just fine!"

Smiles and laughs from the three of us, passed out the goodies, then explained ourselves. Pretty sure she still thought we were crazy!

Update, And Where To Easily See PHL Go Fares Cities?

This run looked interesting, and I was thinking of doing it also. However, many of the flights on Fri Jan 7 are now filled at the low fare levels. I think the first PHL-RDU is still open, but then the PVD and BDL are not available at the lowest fare levels. So maybe we should have a Go Fares weekend in a variety of markets.

Which brings me to the question, is there a screen where you can easily see the PHL Go Fares cities? The data used to be on the home page when they had the 3x miles offer, but no more. Also the Go Fares don't have a "go fares" fare basis code which might be nice.

I can just see the conversations in the PHL break room:
Joe: You know..., I had this pax and they were going to RDU and then straight away going back to PHL?
Jane: You did? I had one going back and forth to MHT like that too?
Bill: I had one going twice to PVD? What are these people doing?

I saw this firsthand on my MHT flights. When I changed dates with the CP desk because of the weather cancellation -- I couldn't check in online. I had to see an agent at check-in. I got my BP in PHL, but couldn't get my BP for the MHT return. When I arrived in MHT I went to the desk and asked to get a BP similar to the above post from shell nyc and my mother this past weekend. The agent asked how I got through security. I told her I had just arrived from PHL and was returning. She was surprised, but the other agent at the desk said --" trying to keep your status huh? There was a group of others here this morning. " I'm guessing the aren't FTers since I haven't seen any other posts about their status run.....

I'm considering doing a couple round trips on the 8th. Are there any plans for dinner in the evening? I might be up for joining up with some folks for that

How come you all did not just print your boarding passes from on-line check in? Get the extra 100 miles each time

Yes I got many looks from the FA. GA when I was leaving and reboarding the flights. I explained it to them. And one of the FA's had said that she had seen quite a few people doing this.

I will be doing this again tomorrow

I did print all my BPs online. Shell NYC checked in online too, but had some printer problems. My mother couldn't check in online as she was an upgraded companion and the computer will not let you do that....
