USAir Introduces Reduced Mileage Awards

US follows suit and introduces mileage awards. Awards are better as only 20000 are needed to fly to the Caribbean or Mexico.

Great... Three days ago I cashed in 70K miles for two tickets PHL-SJU this weekend. With this new offer, I would only need 40K. Does anybody know if I could have the tickets "reissued" for the reduced mileage level? ...

You should be able to reissue your award, but in theory they cancel our original award and issue a new one, so they might try to charge you the fee for cancellation. At least that's what I heard AA was doing.

The reduced awards are different award codes and therefore need to reissued. This involves redepositing the miles for a fee and reissuing.

If you keep the same itinerary, I am sure you can have the fee waived, just be nice.

Not quite...

I called the International Awards Reservations desk... this offer is for new bookings only. What they offered to do -which is what I thought they would- was to redeposit the 70K miles for a fee of $50 ($25 per ticket), then reissue the ticket at the lower mileage level without paying the "ticketed-less-than-3-days-in-advance" $75 fee. The rub is that when I originally ticketed these on Tuesday I already paid $50 to get the e-tickets within the 3-13 day window. So if I go through with the exchange to the lower mileage award, I would've paid $100 for what should be free tickets.

I know that 30K Dividend Miles are worth more than $100, but come on...

Thoughts?

My advice is to call again, and perhaps several times, until you get someone helpful. I called today five times to have an award ticket adjusted. Three of the five people had no idea what I was talking about when I mentioned this promo. One wanted to charge me the redeposit fee and reissue the award at the reduced mileage level. The last one redeposited the award for free, issued a new one at the reduced level, and even refunded the fee that I had been charged for ticketing within 14 days. Now, I just issued the original ticket yesterday, so maybe this had something to do with it. On the other hand, one person I talked to said the offer was valid for tickets issued on or after October 1st, even though they didn't publish it until today. Good luck!

Just FYI, I called the DM Gold Service Center after my chat with reservations. They instead suggested that I contact them after I make my trip and they'll adjust the miles to reflect the lower award levels. We'll see.

Arzee...fyi, also...the first person I talked to referred me to the DM service centre, and the person there told me that reservations should fix the award level and redeposit the miles, or I could contact them after travelling and they would make the adjustment. I was skeptical about the adjustment after travel proposal, but maybe that's just me...
